Hummer fooled me!

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

This afternoon I was actually taking a VERY rare nap in the sofa..(haven't done that in seems like years)

Thunder woke me up....we haven't had a drop of rain hit the ground here in well over a month...a quick popcorn t-storm had sprung up.

My parched and brown yard was so thankful.

I went from window to window peeking out at the water actually falling from the sky...(what a concept)
I looked out my back door and there was a hummer stuck to one of my feeders! It was absolutely pouring...and here was this poor little birdie flapping and carrying on....I screamed to my hubby and ran to put on some shorts..I just had on a tee shirt and underwear.

I dashed out into the downpour and ran over to the feeder where it looked for all the world like it had a foot stuck in one of the feeding ports. Just as I got there,,,it flew off.

I came in looking for all the world like a drowned rat...my back room was covered in water...I had left the back door wide open in my haste to rescue her. I changed clothes and dried off and contemplated the event.....about 10 minutes later I think I figured it out...That little toot was taking a bath!!! It was flapping and rolling around on the base of the feeder and enjoying herself throughly.

I felt like I'd been duped...but glad that she actually wasn't caught in something.

That is really cute Melody, that rescuer instinct kicks in pretty fast, doesn't it?

Haha, That's funny Melody! Better safe than sorry!

I would have done the same thing!

LOL...... Melody. Your DH should have taken a picture.

I would have done the same thing. Especially, with some of the horror stories I've read about some of the feeders. Shoot,....I probably would have ran out in my underwear. lol

What kinds of hummingbirds do you have in OR? I know you probably have some different butterflies that I haven't ever seen.

I only know the Ruby throated hummingbird. Others on here might know what yours is. He's cute tho. Nice pictures. : )

As far as identifing butterflies, just do like me.... Buy a Butterfly book. lol I bought one that has all the Florida butterflies. When I see one I don't know, I run inside and look it up, or I run inside and get my camera, and then I look it up. : )

Welcome hummingbird. Glad to have someone with a love for that wonderful critter. Those are great pics also. I have yet to see one this year sit at a feeder, mine just fly while they eat but then again I am not sure I have one they can perch on. I guess that would help wouldn't it? We are going to love having you here sharing your hummingbird stories with us.

And Melody, sorry for the mishap but sooo glad you went out and checked. I would just hate to think of the poor little guy being stuck and no one there to get him. I do think they like to fool us though and he probably had a blast at your expense.

Welcome hummingbird!

We have a Bug and Insect Identification Forum here that you are encouraged to use also. If you can post a fairly clear picture of whatever it is that you'd like information on, we've got several experts that devote some time every day to help folks.

We also have BugFiles. you can go to the butterfly section and start scrolling through pictures. This feature is only about a year old, so isn't a vast collection yet...(although it's getting close)

We're glad to have you here, and don't be afraid to ask for help navigating ...we've all been new once.

Didn't surprise my husband in the slightest...he expected it!

That lil hummingbird probably said to the others. "Watch this!!! I'll pretend to have my foot caught in the feeder, keep an eye on that young lady by the window." And they all chirped and tweeted with glee. lol : )
