Another. This has one long stem that puts forth a round purple bloom of small petals.

I would guess canna for the first and crinum for the second.

blue, thank-you! canna. hmmm...never heard of these plants!

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Watch out....they multiply like mad!

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

The second one could be Agapanthus, Lily-of-the-Nile. There is a purple variety. I don't know of crinums get that purple.

blue, which ones? both? lol.

betty, thank you for a link! yes the flower does look similar to that.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

I was referring to the canna. They are pretty but can take over a bed in no time. I moved mine last year so they had their own space, that way they could do what they wanted. Hummers love 'em!

Any area that you like to have privacy, just put a few in the ground and by next year....

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Lou's absolutely right Tir. About 15 years ago, I had 1. Now there are stands of cannas throughout my yard. They are great for privacy and for making paths, but you have to keep them trimmed or they WILL take over the world!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Tir, no clue what zone you are in. Canna's come in many varieties and heights. Mine are about 6-7 feet and I have them outside my fence. First frost they die down to the ground and I leave them for most of the winter. In North Central Texas that is about January and February......a few cold days sort of scattered along. Whenever the fever strikes me I will cut them off at the ground and clean up the mess. If it is real cold I leave them longer to serve as their own mulch. They bloom from can to can't. I just deadhead about once a week. Must have over 200 tubers.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

OHHHH wasn't sure these were safe to deadhead...thanks lou! They haven't gotten taller than say 4' in the 5 months I've owned the place. I think I will put them in a corner since you say they grow so fast. Are these bulbs? Tubers....not sure what that is? I'm in 8b, Texas.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Just about ANY PART of them will propagate into more plants. The grow by roots under ground. You can plant the seeds once they've turned dark wherever you want more. If you leave the seeds on the plant until they bust open, they will multiply even faster.

I have 2 kinds. Both are towering over my 7 ft. fence in the back yard. They are beautiful when in bloom. And as someone said before, they are definite hummingbird magnets.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Hmmm haven't seen any hummers here in my yard. :(

Wish I could know what kind of canna it is....Thinking I will plant them in the corner under 2 Queen Palms I just put in? It'd be against a wooden fence. Be nice if my variety grew taller. How long will they bloom? Seems I've enjoyed their blooms since April here.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Not familiar enough with the palms because they freeze here....depends on tall/big they are or the cannas may take over. I just let them multiply underground. Didn't even know unti l joined DG that the seeds would actually be viable.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

aghhhh----where is the plantscout link that used to be at the top?

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Yea...I noticed today that the tabs at the top are different. I got so used to it the way it was and now I am having a hard time finding things too. As for the PlantScout link, I don't know where it went but if you click on the word in your post it'll take you to it.

Kim, THANK-YOU! I knew Dave made changes but didn't realize how many until I needed that link just now. :)

On your homepage, it's under products and sources.

Yep, think you would be more than safe planting the canna under the palm.
