I was surprised to see bulbs (daffodils and tulips) out in Home Depot for sale already!
- I thought it was too early to plant bulbs. Is it better to wait another month or so?
Can they be purchased and stored before planting (it's so humid here I can't imagine that is a very good idea!)?
- Also, although they are quite inexpensive, they are smaller than some of the other ones in the catalogs. Does this mean that they will be smaller plants the first year (e.g. daffodils) or that there will be a higher rate of not coming up in the spring?
- I'd love to know what other people's experience is with bulbs from HD. Thanks!
Home Depot bulbs?
Sounds very early to me. If they aren't too expensive, I might get some to try, but I'd put them in the cooler basement until at least a month from now.
I bought tulip bulbs from HD last fall and they were fantastic! I've posted my pics of "Blue Diamond" on that tulips DG page. You probably don't have to buy now. HD should be adding more bulbs too (they put out what they've got when they come in). Although, do keep them in a cool place if you buy them awhile before planting as cathy4 wrote.
the smaller bulbs should come up, it's just that some may not flower the first year.
Also I should note that the bulbs from last year that I bought were not overly small. Maybe yours have a different supplier in the US?
I bought some crocus bulbs from Lowe's, and they were sooooo cheap. I got 40 for $7.50 or so. It'll be interesting to see how well they do. The rest of my bulbs will come from catalogs and online purchases.
If you're going to got the route of buying bulbs from discount stores I would recommend buying as soon as they appear in the stores. You will do a much better job of storing them. In stores, I've seen bulbs exposed to: too hot/cold conditions or even I've seen one's that have been left out and rained on! I would think if you put them in a basement until planting they'd be ok. It is not recommended to plant tulips until the soil is cold (late October in my zone 5). Daffodils can be planted earlier in October. If you search through some of the posts here you'll see that the bulbs often are confused and come up early if not planted when the soil is cold. Of course this could be due to the weird weather we had last winter!
