When does blue puyas bloom?

Does anyone know how many years until a blue puya blooms?

I've had several Puyas for decades (yes...) with no blooms. I've never tried berteroniana (assuming that's what you have). We must remember that although these are xerophytes, they generally grow at high elevations so they prefer cooler conditions than most of us have (eat you hearts out in Florida - though it's been brutally hot here in August). Many of these are large plants too, so patience is called for.

Hmm. Oh well. Interesting plant at least. How big are yours? This is supposed to be berteroniana.

I was wondering the same thing. I have two berteronianas. One small and one about 12 inches across. How big do they get? I've looked at pics online but can't tell much about the scale/size of the plant. Those spines are lethal, aren't they!? I'm kind of glad it's a slow grower so I don't have to repot often.

Is that the same plant? Look how big the pups are in under a year! I bet you are mighty pleased! Do keep us updated as the bloom appears!

Yep, same plant. I did not realize how much it had grown either until I found this post. Last summer was sooooo hot. I guess it loved that.
I certainly did not expect it to bloom yet. Stay tuned for more

Hi y'all,
I have a couple of puyas, about one year old,( and a few little seedlings I sprouted and haven't killed yet). I understand that the berteroniana gets 6-8 ft. tall, roughly 2-3 ft. wide, and that it takes an average of 5-8 years from sprout to bloom. Quite a wait, but so worth it. I can only image seeing one of these in person as opposed to a photo.

Those spines sure are lethal Groovygrower, even on the youngsters.
