It is a white Tacca- Tacca integrifolia

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

WOW, that is beautiful.

Ok, what did you do to make it bloom? I have one that lived outdoors all winter and seems to be healthy but it has not bloomed. Perhaps I have been ignoring it. Does it need lots of food or anything special? Sun, shade?????

Ocala, FL(Zone 9a)

It is a heavy feeder- I use Superthrive + 2x a year Osmocote
Shade - med. bright light Ok, but no direct sun

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks, I just checked mine and there wasn't a hint of a bud. Off to feed it..............

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Beautiful bloom, I managed to keep my white bat flower alive through last winter, but lost the black one, I've neglected to feed it properly though so the white one is still small. This has provoked me to go fertilize

LOL

thanks for the photo, it's quite stunning.

Ocean Springs, MS

Wow! I'm with everyone else. Going to fertilize.
love, julie

San Antonio, TX

This is one of the plants that strangely appeals to me but I wouldnt want to be in my greenhouse with it at night :o

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I have the white one, it survived the winter in side and has put out a pup and leaves, I fertilized a couple times this summer and threw some worm castings on it last weekend, but it's time to bring it in so, hope it makes it another winter.... it's still dark outside, guess I could grab the flashlight..... hope I get at least 1 bloom.......

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Beautiful Tacca! I have both white and black, and although the white has put on many leaves and is still happy, it hasn't bloomed. My black has bloomed a couple times now - tiny little blooms though :-)

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Well, I could only dream about blooms, maybe in a few years LOL

Ocala, FL(Zone 9a)

IF YOU FERTILIZE AT LEAST 1X MONTH- SHOULD FLOWER WITHIN A YEAR.-

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

A YEAR!?! Should I feed it in the winter? It is inside the house then and it doesn't really grow, rather just sustains itself.

Chickenville, FL(Zone 9a)

Nice photo. Those whiskers sure are lonnnng lol. I wonder what the evolutional reason is that some plants have 'whiskers'? There is a vine 'Poison Arrow' is the common name that has long appendages too. Is it so ants or some other pollinator can climb up them? Anyone know for sure? ~just curious...

Philadelphia, PA(Zone 6b)

Has anyone ever started a white Tacca- Tacca integrifolia
from seeds, if so, tell me how. I have some seeds that I would like to try.
I was told that it's not, a easy plant to grow from seeds.

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Brigette, are you selling any that are in bloom, or about to bloom, on either your website or your ebay listings??

karen

Ocala, FL(Zone 9a)

I'll check if any black ones are working on buds & let you know- White ones in bud all sold- . Sorry

Ocala, FL(Zone 9a)

Seeds can take 3 weeks to 10 mo. to germinate. Like even bottom heat- Keep soil just a bit moist to touch- no soggy soil. Needs to have patience-

Philadelphia, PA(Zone 6b)

Will do.

I sat some out in a milk jug in the shade and forgot them. I have 4 so far that germinated. NOW WHAT!!!!! I have heard they are hard to overwinter indoors, I am in Zone 6b. Any tips for this novice Tacca grower.

Ocala, FL(Zone 9a)

Hello,
The problem with overwintering Taccas indoor is that usually air indoors is too dry. So best not to keep them close to heater vents- that would kill them. Kitchen & bathroom is usually more humid than rest of house - so that would be a good place.
Also can steam up shower & keep plant there overnight.

Also in the winter allow soil to dry a bit between watrings- overwatering can also kill plant. Usually plants look a bit limp in the winter- but do not worry- they're just resting. No need to fertilize in the winter.
Hope this helped.

Thanks, I keep all of my tropicals in the bathroom for the winter so I can raise the humidity some. I do put a fan on low to get some air circulation for the plants, I didn't think Tacca could take the fan though. The fan doesn't blow right on the plants, it blows around above the plants.

With all the plants in there and all the water for the plants it gets pretty humid. Noone uses that bathroom, it's for guests. I have several Passifloras and Brugs in there also. Guests are always amazed when they open the door and see all my plants.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Hi Brigit...Expecting my RF Anthurium tomorrow (ebay)....I can't wait! (Ü)

Glad to see your thread resurrected....are your plants blooming again this year?

I bought a couple of Black Tacca rhizomes a few months back(the rhizomes were much cheaper than actual 'plants'....I have them in a very well draining soil and have a heat mat under them.....they're doing absolutely NOTHING! I checked them a few weeks back to see if they'd rotted...they hadn't, so far.
I'm almost afraid to check them again...have been too busy to do so, anyway.

Good thing I didn't pay much for them....maybe next summer I'll 'take the plunge' and buy an established plant.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

wow.....what did you do special to get it to even grow, i had a white and a black bat plant and they both died

Zephyrhills, FL

spectacular!

Ocala, FL(Zone 9a)

Hi, these plants are really sensitive to cold- no soggy soil, pleanty of fertilizer + hot humid air. - that's all. In the winter I keep them in heated gh. Also no direct sun- bright to med. shade. Also , soil should never totally dry out.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

I have 4 that germinated and have a couple of seed leaves. When do you recommend potting them up. I think one has a real leaf now. I don't want to kill them

Gainesville, FL

I love mine. I have had them for many years and now they are a huge stand. The bloom several times a year, no special treatment

What kind of fertilizer do they like? Would an acidic fertilizer be good for them?

Gainesville, FL

This is a photo I took of mine today, its in bloom now.
I try to fertilize my plants on a schedule, every 2 weeks during the growing season (March-November) but sometimes other stuff gets in the way of my best intentions. As I have limited space and can;t have TOO rampant growth, I alternate 20-20-20 with 10-50-10. I don;t used any special acidifying fertilizer.

I do like to give everyone a foliar spray with Chelated Iron and micros every 3-4 months

Totally cool! Love it!

Ocala, FL(Zone 9a)

Gorfeous!!!!!!!!

Philadelphia, PA(Zone 6b)

That's a beautiful plant.

Gainesville, FL

There are probably 6-7 individual large plants in that complex. It has been divided maybe 8 times over the years, for trades, and I have relocated some plants to the outdoors. I have one blooming in the yard at the moment that is a child of this mother plant. They are not as cold sensitive as people have been led to believe, there are growers in South Florida who have had White Bats take the upper 20's for a very brief time with no long term detriment. Mine get protection via agricultural grade frostcloth when that sort of weather threatens.
Thank you all for the compliments on my bat. Its one of my favorite plants that I have.
