Tulips Darwin or Perennial WHat is the difference?

Moorestown, NJ

I am getting ready to purchase my spring bulbs. I see some catalogs reference their tulips as Darwin others as Perennial. I have planted bulbs in the past without paying much attention to what the growers were calling them. I just looked for the colors I wanted and the right price. I found some were very showy and bloomed for multiple years and other were not. My question is what is the best Tulip for multiple years of blooming. Thanks

species offer the best perennialization. darwins about 5 yrs.
others considered somewhat perennial are greigii, and triumph.
most people consider tulips "cheap" enough to in most cases treat as an annual.
tulips like to bake in the summer.
how long they last depends upon the conditions they get.
basically it's not worth the effort to try and propagate them versus the price you pay for the bulbs. hope this helps.

also the species and greigii are mostly the smaller tulips, darwin bigger.
