My clematis is growing like wild fire!! I had no idea that they grew so fast!
I am shocked!!
mine did too for a while and now its in full bloom. The one blooming is sweet Autumn. Sure is pretty.
Why are you so surprised yours is growing like wild fire. As I said mine did that a couple months ago.

This is my second clematis. My first one didn't do so well. It bloomed big huge purple flowers but the plant it's self was always sickly looking and VERY small. When I move it got left behind, so sad!!! I forgot it!!!
Then I found Dave's Garden and this forum. I bought another clematis and WOW what a difference it makes when you get advice from people who know what they are doing. It is just a baby. Hasn't been in the ground but maybe a week. It has doubled in size already!! It is climbing on my trellis and everything!! I was VERY happy to see it's growth!! I CAN DO THIS!!
As you can see I live in Orlando,Fl and the majority of Clemtis do not do good here for some reason.
I love them tooo. Fran
I have 2 clematis, had 3 but 1 died. the remaining 2 are growing very slowly,1 I trained up string & the other is on a wooden trellis. The stems are very weak looking. the leaves are very tiny. I live in zone 9b & grow most plants in pots. Should I transplant to pots? What kind of fertilizer should I use. I'm not a very good gardener. I have a very black thumb!! HELP!!!
I planted two new iris a month or so ago when one of mine wilted. Both of the new ones were red. Madame Edouard Andre had been cut off at the ground before it was sent to me because it was huge and was blooming. It has now grown a long vine which has buds on it! I can't wait to see it.
The second one was Montecassino. It, too, was cut back to the ground. I see new growth starting, but not all that fast. I expect it will not bloom until next year. Still I am very excited at how well they are both doing. Looks like I will even get a few flowers before winter.
These are wonderful plants and tougher than I realized.
Mommie,
You should usa bloom booster fertilizer on your vines . I use miracle grow and you could give them some vit B 1 to get them started if you just planted them and keep them watered. Fran
Forgot to tell you to keep your vines mulched. Fran
Thans for the advice Fran! I will use the bloom booster right away. How do I use the vit.B1? I forgot about the mulch. Must keep the roots cool. I'm such a dumb bunny. I'm looking forward to some big beautiful blooms one of these days! Thanks again! June
Vit b one is the one that you use to start plants. You can find it in the stores. Supposed to keep plants from going into shock when transplanting. I got some liquid rooting hormone yesterday from a company that is callled Bwicompanies.com. They have everything...Supposed to work better than powder. Fran
The "key" to growing clematis in hotter zones is to make sure and grow them in morning sun and afternoon shade..any part of your garden that will stay MOIST..planting 2-4 inches deeper and mulching helps with this...watering is key!!..They love to have their roots stay moist but drain well..not water-logged or their roots will rot...I have a friend growing them in Phoenix Arizona and he is having success doing just those things...Jeanne
ps. remember hard pruning is essential for baby clematis as it allows them to focus on growing roots and not one single vine..after enjoying the few blooms...hard prune and fertilize and allow to grow..I hard prune all of mine the first few years....they are the Sleep, creep and then leap vine in year 3..so be patient and not expect too much from them in the beginning...clematis require patience on our part and then they will be grand!!
Jeanne,
Thanks for the advice. Fran
