... and I wish I had a picture to show you. So, for now, until I can get a picture, I have to describe what has been happening for the last three days.
I have a small trellis that I had planned on putting in a pot with my Vigna Caracalla vine, but for reasons I'll explain below, I cannot move the trellis now. This trellis is on my patio propped up against a chair, and when you look out the door, you can see it off to the right. The back door is basically a paned glass door.
Every day for three days now, there's been a male ruby throated hummer that will perch on the top of this trellis. And, from where he perches, he can see inside the house. The first day he perched there, he saw me inside the house because his head and eyes would follow me. So, I would stand inside in front of the door and we'd just look at each other. This happened first thing in the morning, and in the evening when I got home from work.
Now, it feels like he perches on the trellis just waiting to see me through the door. So, when I see him, I'll stand by the door, and I'll talk to him (not that he can hear me), and I'll stay there until he leaves. He stays there for quite some time. If I open the door to go outside, he'll fly off to perch in a branch, and then watch me for a bit from his "safe" spot.
Tonight, I think he was trying to impress me. After I got home from work, sure enough, he was perched on the trellis "waiting" for me. This time, he would sit there for a bit, and then fly in a large circle, only to return to the trellis. He did this three or four times.
My daughter even thought this to be a special thing, and immediately thinks that this hummer has a liking for me. It's just the coolest thing!! Of course, when my boyfriend came over this evening, and my daughter told him that I have a new "boyfriend," he felt a bit threatened. LOL!!
I have a new "boyfriend".... :)
That is soo cute. I do think he likes you, I mean really likes you. Is that so sweet him trying to impress you like that, flying in a circle and all. I mean I think if he was thanking you for a feeder or flowers he would do that once maybe. But to be there every day waiting for you, that is something special. Good for you. Great story.

Great story! I feel hummers have a lot of sense. Mine seem to tell me if their feeder is empty by flying to my window where I'm sitting and just hover, looking into the window.
Maybe yours knows you are the one who keeps his feeder full and considers you a dear friend.
It is pretty cool. :) This didn't happen last year when I first started feeding them. And, today, when I picked my daughter up after school, she asked me if I saw my "new boyfriend." LOL!!
I think you're right, Cordeledawg, they do have a lot of sense, how else wold they know when to avoid danger, and when they can "bully" others. :) Very fascinating birds.
Sounds fun! Were you wearing a red blouse?
oh how sweet
