HD Plumeria - Lipstick or Cancun Pink

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

My first plumeria purchase was a couple of years ago at Home Depot. I got a three tip and a single tip, both rooted. One was Playful (which is Cancun Pink, right?) and the other was Lipstick, but I'm not sure which one was which. Although, they've both grown very well, I just got my first bloom from the (quite large now) three tip. Here's an up-close of the bloom. The fragrance is nice and semi-sweet, although I definitely don't have great "sniffing power"...

I'll also post a pic of the plant (which is now about 5-1/2 feet) and the other, single tip which hasn't bloomed yet.

I hope someone can tell me whether it's Lipstick or Cancun Pink that's blooming.

Thanks :-)

This is the single tip, purchased at the same time. It has not yet bloomed.

Right! That is 'Playful,' which is probably 'Cancun Pink.' My 'Lipstick' hasn't bloomed yet, but here is a picture of someone else's below.

Thanks, Clare.

That Lipstick looks like a much brighter pink than mine. So the smaller one tip must be the Lipstick :-)

That's pretty! I just repotted mine (Lipstick) today (it was rootbound in a 1 gallon pot). It's bloomed a couple of times but not this year, so far. My Kauka Wilder is the only one to bloom this year.

We are finally getting heat but it may be too late to get blooms.

Karen, yes, your first pic is definitely 'Playful.' I ended up with about six of them for some reason and am trying to get rid of five of them! Unfortunately, these are tall growers, and most of mine are in 15-gallon pots at this point.

Jackie, it is not too late to get blooms. I am getting new inflo's all the time. I will get inflo's starting as late as November here. Blooming usually stops at the end of December for me so I put them in a portable greenhouse to finish blooming by then.

I've been looking for one of those pop-up greenhouses. I see some on sale online. Sure could have used one last winter during our freak cold spell. I want to be prepared this year.

Jackie, I'm definitely going to have to do something like that too for all my hibiscus and plumies. Where did you find the sale??

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I had one and ordered two more during the cold spell last winter. They got to me within a week so I set them up right away. This is where I got mine: http://www.comforthouse.com/flowerhouse1.html They have them on sale right now for $128 each. They also have them here: http://www.amazon.com/FlowerHouse-Spring-House-Portable-Greenhouse/dp/B00012D02W/ref=pd_bbs_sr_7/104-1854562-5059930?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1187406642&sr=8-7

Clare, that looks great. Did you have out in the open, or on a covered patio, or ? Did it save all your plants? After losing a number of my in-ground hibiscus during the crazy freeze, I'm quite concerned this year as I have added quite a few more plants (mostly in pots though).

My portable greenhouses were all out in the open. One was against the house in the backyard. I laid bricks along the sides to keep it down when it got windy. The ones that were in the greenhouse were protected and not damaged, but I did have some cold damage on a few tips that were outside the greenhouse. Many of the ones that I put in the greenhouse in December had inflo's, and blooming continued throughout the winter, even without supplemental heat. Daytime temps were very warm inside, and I vented the greenhouse every day but closed it up at around 3:00 p.m. before it got cool out.

Well, you've got me sold. I think this is the solution for my precious potted tropicals this winter.

Thanks so much for the information!

Sure, Karen. The nice thing about the Springhouse from Comfort House is that it is practically pop up, and then you add the support so set up is not difficult. I had a different portable greenhouse from Harbor Freight Tools for two years before last winter, and it required a much more difficult and tedious set up with PVC pipe and anchors, but it was much bigger as well. Here is a shot of the outside of the Springhouse from last winter.

Clare the picture of your green house in the picture you have a large graft that kinda stands out it looks to have a kind of brown leaf stems could you tell me what that one is

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Dana, those were Thai cultivars on a rack in my greenhouse. The colors look more brown in the picture than they really are. I think that one is the cultivar that Kukiat named after me.

Very nice i was just wondering I have a lot of thai seedlings and they do have that broze tint to the leaf stems.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Dana, I have seedlings from Hawaii with that brown tint to the leaf stems and leaves as well. Some eventually lose the brown/bronze color, and some have kept it. It is said that those will be pink or red cultivars. The bright green or pure green seedlings often end up being yellow or white, but these are all just generalizations and can't be relied upon.

i don't think i'm doing the gh thing this winter. i get tired of the white flies and spider mites. oh, and let's not forget the electric bill. i guess i could just have it come on when it gets below a certain temp. however, then it will just run continuously. i might just put them in the laundry room with a fan. no extra lights and no heat mats. of couse, they can easily get me to change my mind. i will leave many of them outside this winter and only bring them in when nights are going to be below 35. hmmm...i don't think i know what i'm going to do. haha!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Dete. I say that every year, and then I see inflo's on things that have never bloomed before, and I change my mind. It's a pain and an expense -- no doubt. I've been using my Forbid which gets the whiteflies and mites very well, and I alternate with Avid and Neem. I also used no heat or fan in my greenhouses last year to keep costs down, but one of them had two heat mats going 24/7 on a rack with the precious ones. The high daytime temps seemed to negate the low nighttime temps, and there was little to no shedding of leaves inside, and I had blooms all winter long. I did open them up every day, however, to let the fresh air in, but I closed them up by about 3:00 p.m. or so when it was still quite warm out. If you do set it up, I would have your heat come on at around 40 degrees so that there is time to heat the greenhouse before the temps drop even further and reach 32. I've had outdoor temps reach 35 here without damage. Damage for me outside starts when temps reach 32 for a couple of hours.
