So weird.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I didn't notice until I was looking at my photos just now, this weird cluster of orange stuff that looks hard but also looks like it oozed out of the seeds. I have already sent the seed pods off to someone who wanted them, so I can't take a closer look. Shoot. I wonder what it is.

And made an inter-generic hybrid between Chiranthodendron and Fremontodendron that looks like this.

Which I thought was so cool.

Kell,

I have been looking for a Chiranthodendron pentadactylon for years now. Do you know where I can get one. Are you able to root cutting from your tree? I have search all over S. Cal with no luck.
Any help would be appreciate.

Thanks,

Lonny

What cool photos!

p.s., I think you seeds are fine. A lot of seeds have this little bulge on the end. You, being special, have a big, gaudy orange blob. LOL

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

don't strelitzias have similar orange fuzz?

Lonny, I have no tree. The SF Arboretum has both the yellow and the red. In fact I took the picture of the flannel bush flower there too. I do believe they sell them at times during their sales.

I think the seeds are fine too, very fresh. I was told by
Dr. Don Mahoney, the Strybing Horticulture Manager that those seeds need to be planted right away and to not store them or they won't germinate. They were picked off the tree, not from the ground. They were starting a bunch there to sell just a few weeks ago.

Someone on Dave's really wanted them so I gathered some from the ground a few months back but I think they would have been too old. And my DH tossed the little seed bag I had them in before I could send them off. I was thrilled to be able to get fresh ones for the Daver. I bet he gave up on me. I usually send the stuff but always so late. Ask Alice. LOL

I have never noticed such blobs before Alice. Tells you how not observant I am. LOL

This pic is a bit creepy I think as the hand starts to reach out. LOL

I love that plant, the cross with Fremontodendron is really cool too! Guess I'll have to keep my eyes open at the Strybing sales! I've been lazy this year and haven't driven over there for any of them, guess I better start going again!
