Posted this to the Bug Identification list last night, but didn't get any takers:
I live in Woodinville, in the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range just east of Seattle. Tonight a noticed a spot in the yard with a couple hundred red-winged, red-bodied "guys" climbing around in the grass. I don't know much about bugs, but they looked like they had just emerged and were getting ready to take flight. I didn't see pairs at all, so I'm guessing that there was no mating going on.
The bugs were about 1/2" long. The spot on the lawn was about 10 feet from the house. I've never seen these before, so I'm hoping that they aren't anything that has invaded the house.
Second post:
From what I can tell, this is the Pacific Damp Wood Termite in its winged form: [HYPERLINK@bugguide.net]
Anybody know what I should do at this point? There was a partially-buried decomposing piece of wood under the spot where I saw them. It's dark now and they're gone - presumably into that spot. I would guess that I should dig the root/wood out and move it away from the house.
Thanks,
Kathy
Is This the Pacific Damp Wood Termite?
So I got a response on Bug Identification and sure enough, it's termites. I was digging in the ground where I saw them last night, wondering if I could disturb the stump that I thinkn they're using. No activity. However, tonight (dusk), I see them in the back yard at the window. Not tons of them, but a few that look like they're trying to get in. Eeek!! Thank goodness I like my spiders and leave as many webs up as I can.
Kathy
