One of my gingers look like it has something like canna leaf rollers - ya know, the leaves don't unfurl and end up looking stringy at the top? So far it hasn't spread but I'm scared to death it will.
What could this be?
Thanks,
Sherry
Gingers rolled and stringy - please help!
I noticed a few doing that on mine-I just unfurled them and they were fine. It isn't due to any bugs. My guess would be a watering and or heat issue. I am not worried about it-looks kind of funky huh? lol
mine do that during the heat of the day....
I think it is the drought.
I started a thread about curling gingers but got little response. I had two. One eventually died from crown rot, the other one seems to be on the same path. Mine were planted in a low area of my garden so I concluded it was excessive moisture. Having said that, I have another variety about 5 ft away and that one is completely healthy and thriving.
Well, I am sure mine are NOT too wet!!! LOL
hmmm. Maybe the curling is a sign of stress--too little or too much of something, in this case watah.
I noticed a few of my gingers the end of last wk looked like they may have leaf rollers. I got the ole soap spray bottle & BF went nuts!
LRs have been decimating my cannas this yr. Everyone keeps saying they(meaning cannas) will take over the world....well that is only if the leaf rollers don't get them first!!
Gingers looked fine last nite so my hat is off to Palmolive, again!!!
:~)
Mine will "cup" inward during the most intense sun of the day (almost into a roll sometimes) but by the next morning they are fine. I assume they are doing that to conserve water.
But that is different from the problem I posted abt. I cut off the stringy rolled leaves but if they come back, I'll take a pic.
The particular one that has this problem does get more water than the others bcs it is next to something I water every day so maybe there is something to the excess moisture thing - although, it's other leaves cup during the heat also - looks like they wouldn't if they had so much water that it was too much. But who knows.

I know what you are talking about Firstyard-where the top few leaves don't unfurl, but keep growing. Long stringy looking at the top of the plant.
Firstyard, maybe they curl so they don't get sunburned! lol
Now, I'm going to have to try to ck them out this wkend!
:~)
I've had this with several tropical/subtropicals (philodendrons, gingers, elephant ears) that are trying to make it in our dry heat. I'm pretty sure it's the lack of humidity. In the dry air the furled leaves stick to themselves and can't unroll easily.
If spraying with soapy water worked, it could have been the water as much as it was the soap, but maybe the soap helped lubricate...? If you want to use dish soap, just remember to use something mild like Smockette's choice of Palmolive. Avoid dish soaps with degreasers, which can damage foliage (voice of experience here -- I once destroyed some impatiens with Dawn).
Try just spraying/splashing the foliage with water a couple of times a day.
I think the curling or cupping of ginger leaves probably is not so much conserving water, but just the top surface drying out (maybe it's the same thing). The plant will probably have an easier time of it with a splash of water on the leaves - especially new leaves that haven't hardened off yet.
