Begonia propagation success!

I've been learning to propagate Begonias, with much help from Lali. She's a great teacher! Just look at the good luck I'm having! It's so exciting! :o) Thank you so much, Lali!

OK Rain..............spill it!!!!!!!!!!!!! i want to know how you did this....................

I'm just leaving about an inch of stem on the leaf and putting them down basically the same way I do AV leaves, except that I'm keeping the container covered to keep the humidity up.

Here's a whole box of begonia leaves. There are roots all over the place under the leaves. It's really neat!

A cane begonia I almost killed, but managed to save. :o)

OK, I am going to try tomorrow with the few rexes (the fuzzy ones) that I do have..............I think I only have two of those left that I didn't kill...............
I am waaaaaaaaaaay impressed Rain............

I can root canes all day long in water in the house.....................just haven't been able to tackle the rex ones................I left my 'Ginny' outside after growing in the house and she died..........am still in mourning.........

This was sent to me as a rhizome clump, I guess you'd call it. I got it to root and it put up a bloom stalk! :o)

Is ebay the only place to order rhizomes of begonias????????

Thanks, Gail! I'm impressed, too! LOL I always thought I couldn't grow begonias. LOL

This is a beefsteak begonia. The one on the right was sent to me as a small plant and desperately needs to be repotted. The big one on the left I grew from a leaf.

I've gotten my begonias from DG friends. :o) I'll send you some leaves, if you'd like.

Please..............I just need one leaf from a few to try and see if i can.................

I'll put them in your box with the Gessies when I send it next week. :o) If you don't mind, you can put a few of yours in my box, too. :o) We'll learn together! I've found these to be super easy.

sounds like a deal.................I just sent you a dmail to say we can send our boxes out next week............very excited..............

Sounds great! I'm looking forward to it! :o)

Canes are more difficult for me than the rhizomatous ones. I don't know why. I had a really pretty trout-leaf begonia (I think that's what it was), but I killed it. :o( The one pictured above is the only cane I have left. I bought it in Florida as 'Dancing Lady', but have never been able to find a begonia by that name.

Oh I am sooo envious .... I cannot grow Rex Begonia's for anything! They just do not love me or even like me! I have tried over the years and cannot keep one alive. Now, I love the Cane/Mallet types ... they seem to be easy for me. I have the Dragonwing Begonia 'Benigo' (cane) that I've had for many years. I'm always breaking off stems of that one (not always on purpose) and just stick them in soil and they root so easily. I also have some that's been growing in water for a year! I have a cane type begonia called 'Frosty' that I adore! I bought it last year and it wasn't doing real well for awhile but has really perked up this summer! Sure wish I could grow those Beautiful Rex Begonia's!

Oh Gail .... I do have a little Mini Begonia that you gave me for my terrarium! It is doing Great!! I don't remember the name of it though! Will take a picture tomorrow and post it .... maybe you will remember the ID?

Great Growin Ladies!!

Very nice Amy! My first attemp at the rex begonias was 'Curly Fireflush' last year. I bought it from Logee's and I loved it so! I tried to put down a leaf from it, by pinning the whole leaf down like they show in most books... nothin' ever came of it. I nursed and nursed that plant along, but it died by fall. I have had much better luck with the 'Escargot' I showed you. I think I will put down a leaf like I would an AV leaf, and see how it works. Thanks for inspiring me! I wonder if I can find another 'Curly...'

Whoo whoo Whoo (doing the Julia Roberts whoop from Pretty Woman!!) Atta girl Rain! Nicely done!

Gail, you can do it!! Root them just like you do your AV's and you'll be swimming in Begonias in no time. Just give them plenty of humidity (use your new bowls!!)

Also, check the sticky link for more vendors and propagation tips.

Hi ladies..................i am going to look out on the porch tomorrow and see just how many I really do have............they are not pretty because it has been 100 degrees.............but they have good 'startings'...........................

I also ordered (you will laugh begoniacrazii) a whole case of clear giant corsage boxes for propagating...................

Lin, I have no recollection of even sending you a begonia??????????????????? You will have to show me a picture..............

Gail: I thought this little Begonia came from you, but it may have been a box I got from Allison when I won Bingo one time! I can't remember the name and I'm not in contact with Allison so I have no idea which one this is. Here's a (not great) picture: Does it look familiar to you?

no mam, it must have come from Allison............she sent me a cane that has done well..........so it must be hers...............looking nice, Lin.............
