Lorak, your Silver Sebright is really pretty. And I'm proud you named him after me, Donna Sylvester

Now I must tell all of you about my sad experience last Thur. Aug, 9, 07. I have about 2/1/2 acres of my 5 1/2 acres fenced in with solid redwood fence, been in place for about 10 years now. Has one large drive-thru gate and 2 smaller walk-thru gates,. Last March I decided to try Gardening with Guineas using Jeannette Ferguson's book (same name) as a guide. So found a fellow with 6 (he said) male guineas. Bought two at $10.00 each. Brought them home and put in chicken yard where they stayed for 10 days or so so that they would know this is home.. Clipped a wing on one side of both guineas so that they would not fly over the fence. I had 5 large banties, two of which laid the blue-green eggs, one black & silver roo. All of us were happy and the guineas were certainly busy catching bugs.

As it turned out the fellow I bought the guineas from did not know how to tell one sex from the other, and neither did I. When the Lavender guinea started laying eggs I knew I had a pair. The other one is a Pied. They were constantly together in the yard. If one found something good to eat, it called the other one over and they shared.

Sadly when I was gone for a couple of hours Thur. the neighbors dog came into the yard, killed the dark brown banty hen, and killed and took home the female Lavender guinea, she had hidden a nest with 31 eggs in it (another story). When I went to the neighbor woman, she said she was sorry and would pay for the guinea.. I called the sheriff deputy, but he never came to my place, just told me over the phone that he would issue a written warning to them. I have never heard a word the husband.

The Pied male guinea has been so lost. He walks around the yard calling to his mate and comes to the sliding doors and wants to come inside. I feel so sorry for him. The dog also pulled all the feathers out of the black banty's tail and scared him into the storage loft where he stayed until about noon the next day. I don't know where the other hen hid, she showed up the next day.

The pied male guinea flew over the fence and up to another neighbors house, where eventually we caught him and I brought him home.

Now I have to shut the gate every time I go anywhere, a real bother. The neighbor whose dog killed my pets is supposed to install one of those hidden wires that will keep the dog in their yard as long as it wears the collar.

I am very upset at the whole mess and especially since the neighbor husband has never said a word to me about being sorry or anything.

Thats a terrible story, I free range with me outside and if I have to go into the house the dogs are out. Anyone who free ranges takes the chance that their poultry will get killed, a chicken/whatever poultry is very very low on the food chain. Gardening with guineas wasn't what your were following, you should have kept your guineas inside thier coop for atleast 6 weeks, my fav guinea site is Frits who wrote the book. Ok maybe Frit didn't write the book but it is the Gardening with Guineas site. Frit knows everything possible about guineas. A broody guinea hen will most likely be killed by predators because she will not roost.

I'm sorry I have obviously upset you. I was just trying to let Donna know that her male will most likely be ok in the end.

Sorry you were offended. I will edit my post out .

No its not you, I thought i would post pics of my pets and then she came and posted and never even commented about the pic and then told a tale of woo. I probably should not have posted anything this week, I am sick as a dog, no voice so I cannot talk so thats makes me more mean more than usually. So its not you its me, I still do believe if you come across a nice post don;t mess it up with death, death happens, just don't post it on something I spent hours trying to post on dial up

I didn't intend to start a problem about gardening and guineas.Guess I didn't make clear that my guineas had free range of an entirely enclosed more than 2 acre area and I had had them for 6 months so this was home to them.

the neighbor did come to my house yesterday after I left them a letter with a bill for all of $15.00 for the female guinea and one hen. He apologized and said he would have the wire restraining their dog in place by the end of the week, so I should be able to leave my drive-thru gate open during the daytime. Their house is at the end of my almost 1/5 of a mile lane, so their animals should not be coming near my house anyway.
