"Plum Crazy" in Minnesota

Apple Valley, MN(Zone 4a)

There was another thread about Plum Crazy awhile back that seemed to suggest that there might be both a hardy Plum Crazy and a not-so-hardy variety.

I just bought this one this spring and planted it next to my Fantasia, hoping that if Fantasia can survive our winters, Plum Crazy might do the same.

Here is one of the blooms - just one stalk this year, so the bloom season will be brief, but hopefully, it will be bigger next year.

Jeannine, it is Plum gorgeous. I had one that wasn't planted last fall and did not come back in the nursery pot (of course I blame myself for not sinking the pot or bringing it in or just planting the poor thing). I want another one but will wait until spring. It is really a pretty pink... I sure hope yours comes back for you in zone 4a - that would mean they would come back for me in 5b. It's lovely!

There are 2 different Plum Crazy's. One is hardy and one is tropical. This is my tropical:

I've read tropicals have shiny leaves and hardy ones are not so shiny... but in Florida, they're ALL hardy..........I need to move south! Thats a pretty one!

Cat, I like that one too. Variety is the spice of life...it's going to be spicy around here next year.

The color on my hardy Plum Crazy is a little more subdued than the picture shows. It looks much like Fantasia but with a darker, more pronounced eye, and the foliage is tinted slightly red.

Brugie, LOL, spicy gardens are the best. :-))))

Here's a shot from this morning with more of the foliage.

She is a BEAUTY - any way your look at her! Is that the one that looked whiteish in the 2nd photo? Great shot, Jeannine! I like how the blooms are "watching" each other's back lol ... so pretty!

AuntB, this is the hardy Plum Crazy. None of the blossoms on the plants that grow in Minnesota look whitish. They are all a deep mauve pink with a dark red eye.

I planted Plum Crazy next to Fantasia this past May - not the best placement as far as being able to differentiate the plants because they are similar to an untrained eye. They are in my front yard, and this year they are creating quite a stir. Fantasia has been there about 4 years, and this year it is putting on a real show with several stalks covered with blooms. Even the UPS driver stopped to inquire about them.

Love your little garden area. I have 2 plums that are opening as we speak. Will take pics in a couple of hours, when they are fully opened.

Thank you all for the nice comments. Yes, it is fun to have people stop to talk about gardening . . . putting smiles in people's hearts makes the garden worth all the effort.
