Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

AAAhhhh... we're getting going now.. real close to escape velocity and critical mass.. of brug blooms..
when there are over a few hundred open together.. the soft still air is awash with so many contributors of fragrance .. not to mention the honeysuckle and jasmine... This is what it has been for ... Full envirornment Aroma therapy..
leading the charge tonight .. is the lovely if with a smaller flower Snowcone.. Gordon

And a new favorite...... left to right ...day one three... four ...and two of Painted Lady..

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

mmmm, I can smell it now. I think the white brugs have the sweetest smell. That is a pretty passion flower also.

Do you fertilize the Brug to get it to bloom so much? Mine has just y'd and is putting out blooms but not a whole lot. The most is right now; a total of 3. Thanks for your advice

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

here's the last photo...sorry.. you can't add a photo in edit..
OK...maybe I should have posted this in the what's wrong with my plant section ...as you can see painted Ladys leaf.. but I'm pretty sure it's just wind damage mostly.. or the result of the plastic explosives used on the white flies or mites.. Gordon

Anaid, me too, I get blooms but only three or four at a time. Gordon how are you doing this, your's are so beautiful!!!! I love the look of so many blooms at once!! Your photos are just awesome......

San Antonio, TX

Another question came to mind. I have several other brugs in the same very large pot. Should I separate them into different pots?

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Soft Pink is a new first year cutting with one bloom now...but I'm sure before Frost it will have a pile more for me...
Anaid/Thea611.. yes Ifeed mine..starting with a pile of decomposed and dehydrated cow manure in the spring... and later I water with my bloom booster type ferts... to over ride the nitrogen of the manure .. and spraying with Spray-N-Grow .. [ with their Bills Perfect ferts added ] and Messenger ... foliar spraying with an organic ....Tiger Bloom.. did I mention regular fertilization... and the next day I'll water ... just kidding...I don't do all that in one day.. and hte roots are a few years in development,,, to get such blooming in my harsh conditions.. One bloom on Cypress Gardens TODAY...her record for me was 145 buds the day a hurricane worked up the coast..
on how many in a container... I have plenty really big ones in one container... but the container is 22 feet long... and they don't shade one another too much.. all are well fed and watered... the only problem with two in a smaller pot.. aside from the just mentioned possible problems shading/nutrients ...is removing one is about impossible so they are wedded forever there... Wonderful pictures! Your brugs are beautiful, and that view is awesome!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Thanks Shelly..
Teresaln..yes it is grand...withoutawind it hovers... and I float up with it..
Anaid.. it'sClerodendrum thomsoniae..http://www.logees.com/prodinfo.asp?number=R1174-4...but the problem with mine.. is... I planted it in with a now gigantic Night Booming Cereus a few years ago.. and they are unseperatable now ..See Anaid.. cavaleir planting... comes back to haunt one...
The strongest smelling one this year.. might be Whiskers.. Thanks Felecia... but no blooms tonight to show.. and a few new seedlings open up there tonight ... we'll photograph them in the morning.. or tomorrow evening..
here's the backside of the Clerodendrum thomsoniae.. it's pot mate.. to remove either would be such a heart break for the other .. Gordon

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Your rooftop garden is amazing, Gordon. You have certainly got the right growing system worked out and the beautiful blooms show it. Would love to be there and see them in person, and then go shopping. Lol.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

What a spectacular show, Gordon, and only to get better, if we can imagine the fall display and the glorious fragrance. Inspiring! Where and how do you store them for the winter? I have six to put in my basement this year...

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Gordo,
How do you overwinter them? and the clero?

Your view must be amazing from up there! Beautiful pics!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Your garden is once again amazing Gordon. You sure have some beautiful blooms there.

Gordon! I made one of your trellises today. (bamboo and plastic ties) Sanfrantastic!
Thanks for sharing the idea.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Welll Thanks Shirley.. we owe it all to one another.. and the personal hours...Thank you..
Liz... thanks... and thanks for the link... amaising growing there... I had a vertical strawberry art piece.. back some38 years ago...seems like yesterday... it was a shaped hanging form..that was planted in Strawberries.. love your vines...
WOW... Thanks Joyce... yes.. it's too cool here now... hope it scares everyone into blooming... 67*F at noon... that's winter someplaces..
Angel Tree Baby,.. well thanks.. I think it's wonderful... as long as it's warm... and the wind is somewhere below a near gale.. ... night is magical everywhere ... but this picture if for you... just getting dark...

Elaine... Thank you... you can have all of the cool you'd like here... a'd trade off any ammount of it... hope it's found you also...
Tussee... well thanks.. sure do comeby... get the tour.. have your complemenntary beverage... and we'll get you shopping... going out to find gigantic lobsters...today.. there's most anything here... it's a lifetimes devotion.. to find where your favorites are... and then to park near by...
Andy.. Thanks... well I bring mine down also... I wish I had a cool basement... but it's pretty warm here... with three water heaters... and two large furnaces... even the hallway is to warm to put them to sleep... so I keep them all inside with me... there is a marrked trail from the living room to the kitchen.. and down to the bedroom.. and computer area.. so there is less chance of getting lost.. with all of the plants everywhere.. there's 3 400 w. HID lights.. and 6 150 watt color-corrected spots..[ general house lighting ] it is a challenge during the winter ... getting them out is like a vacation..
Jen... everything temder comesdown with me.. and is spread about .. clero gets a front window.. and will keep the blooms going way way into the winter .. very therapeutic
Terry... well thanks... here's a photo looking in from the outside...
Liz... well gald you got to try out that trellis construction technique... fast and easy isn't it.. and quite strong.. your great vines are allways neding an additional space I'd imagine... it's easy to lash an extention to the one you made... up and over ... glad you liked it.. got a picture..

Honestly, Gordon...Your trellis is the most useful garden idea I've come across. The ties hold like iron. I'm using the metal stakes with plastic coating. A bit pricey, but with your technique, built to last indefinitely. I highly recommend this trellis method to everyone.

Your garden and view are breathtaking. Are you retired? Or, if not, what is your vocation - if I may ask?

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

I can only repeat what others have said here. Your garden and view are amazing!! It is so obvious that you put much time and effort into everything, and it is definitely rewarding you for it!! I'm also glad that Whiskers can be a part of all of that beauty. :)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Those pictures are wonderful. What a view on a warm summer night. I do have to ask how you mow your lawn? LOL! Your rooftop garden and view is a rare treat that I won't soon forget.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Oh gosh! What a wonderful place to sit at night, and just relax. Gordon, its just beautiful!

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Gordon,, what a beautiful night view. And I love the trellis.
thanks for sharing

Gordon, your pics are blowing my mind, especially the night one. If I hadn't spent all my money on plants and garden stuff this year, I'd be on a plane to come and visit you! How GORGEOUS!! Those blooms...just magnificent. Makes one understand why they're called "Angel Trumpets"!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Liz.. No..I'm not retired just yet..I've a retirement program that lets me work up to and including the day I die... the last day which is optional. Well.. I'm an artist I guess... but gave that up to make a living.. Kind of like an Ace of all trades.. I do most anything.. building wise.. electrical..plumbing.. structural....in the country I've designed and built a few houses.. from digging the hole to handing over the keys.. solar and custom homes... I build anything.. here in the city I do restorations..repairs..instalations.. and most anything to help out a small group of friends.. I try to schedule the brain surgerys I do... to be done early in the week... Mondays or Tuesday...
Felecia.. Yes your Whiskers is a welcome part of Paradise here... It's grand aroma alone secure it's place... looking foward to more blooms out of last falls cutting...yes,, like most everything else..she could use more pot...
Shirley... Well Thanks .. Mowing.. well I ahve an electrical weed trimmer... I just buzz over the lawn some with it.. then rake.. it does help with the cooling/heating below I'm sure..but it's just for the visual relief.. years ago I had an inside lawn... it helps to elevate the spirit.. Did you read Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein..
Shelly.. yes it's fun to sit up there... but relaxing is hard in ones own garden... so many voices calling out.. each with a suggestion as to something to do for them.. night time is quieter up there..everything looks better in candle light..
Elaine.. Thanks... it's my pleasure to share the pictures of the garden.. I don't get to show it off much...so few have seen it.. as there is only a couple of places that look upon it... not like a ground garden that can bring joy to many passers by.. but I can garden wearing most anything or nothing.. like a remote country place...
Lala... yes..the angel trumpets are real special...few plants can go from a cutting to a large blooming tree in a season.. and fewer still with such a floral display.. and Fragrance..well none better... well visit another year... I might have another here... but it's too cold in the winter..not like Midland City.. a bit colder than mothers .. outside of Ardmore ,AL
and another nightime photo ..for thoes that like the sparkle of the city... Gordon

That photo is really breathtaking. I bet it has been quite an adventure to garden on the roof. You probably have alot of the same problems as I do here in the desert (up the mountain)...with wind, and horrible heat. Our temps get into the 120's and it can be really windy at times. Our yard is mostly gravel and rock and with the concrete from the house and yard walls who knows how hot is really is here !

I suspect your rooftop radiates quite a bit of heat too. I have to keep my pots off the ground here or plant in wooden pots (wood is a poor conductor of heat).
Do you have any tips or special things you do to deal with heat or radiating heat?

Ah, Gordon. We have things in common. I'm a muralist working my way back to muraling. I've also restored a couple of old houses.
Pruning in the buff has yet eluded me...I have pity for the neighbors here, thus I remain clothed.
I do strap on my headlamp during the Fall when pollination time is nigh and the night blooming Bruggies beckon.

Sounds like you're a happy man.
Good for you!
