I am trying to find some where to get a very large pot. It needs to be pretty deep more than anything I think. My mom is giving us a plant that she has no room for and the plant has roots coming out of it quit a ways from the top of the pot. I think that part of the plant should me in the dirt also. I am not sure what it is. It look kinda like an elephant ear but the leaves on it are different. If anyone knows where I might be able to find a pot I would really apprecate it. Thanks
Looking for a very large pot
Hi Melissa: You could try the nearest Wal-Mart, Home Depot or Lowe's for large pots. If you don't find what you need there you might ask at a local nursery. Can you post a photo of the plant your Mom is giving you so maybe someone can ID it correctly? Sometimes on rather large plants you can do some root pruning before re-potting. When roots are growing out the bottom it usually does need to be repotted and I've sometimes just taken a plant out of the original container and pruned the roots a bit and repotted it with fresh potting medium back into the same pot. But, it probably depends on what the plant is that you are dealing with. Would love to see a picture!
I looked at Walmart and couldn't find one. Found one in a gardening mag but don't know if it would be big enough and it is a little high priced. The roots aren't growing out of the bottom of the pot they are coming out further up on the plant where it isn't in the dirt. I can try to get a picture of it but it might be a while before I can. Tried to see if I could find one on the plant files but didn't see anything. It looks kinda like a elephant ear but it goes in along the edges and almost looks like it fingers all around the leaves.
I would try Lowes or Home Depot, they usually have a selection of relatively cheap pots in a wide range of sizes.
I found some nice ones that were reasonably priced at Tuesday Morning.
I wonder if it's a variety of Philodendron .... some have very large leaves like the Elepnant Ear's ... and it may be aerial roots that are showing. I will go take a couple of pic's of two of my larger Philo's for you to see what I mean.
I hope you can post a picture. I am just trying to figure out what it might be from your description. But, it's really throwing me with the part about looking like an EE but with fingers around the leaves? Are the leaves real large?
I'll keep pondering on it but it will really help if you can post a photo.
The leaves are split like your monstera but are rounded at the tips instead of looking like they go straight like yours. The leaves are very large but can't really tell from looking at your picture if they are bigger then that how much. The roots coming out above the pot to look like the ones in the picture of your mostera.
Melissa: Here's another type of Philodendron that gets really large. I have lots of them planted in my yard and they grow really huge .... these also have the large leaves and have roots that grow out of the main stem. This one is called Split Leaf Philodendron: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/37036/
Take a look at theses photo's in Plant Files of different Monstera deliciosa plants and see your plant resembles any of them:

The very first photo in PF sounds sorta like your description:

The leaves aren't split that much (split leaf). That first picture on the plantfiles looks similar but the leaves doen't have any other holes in them but on the edges where the are split and the leaves are more rounded at the tips kinda like the tips of you fingers they aren't square looking like that.
The Monstera deliciosa leaves split more and more the older the plant gets. I have some small rooted cuttings that have no splits in the leaves yet.
I'm sure when you get a chance to post a photo of your plant, it can be properly identified.
Here's a picture of one of my smaller Monstera's where a couple of the leaves are just beginning to split but most have no signs of it yet:
I found a plant on plantfiles that the leaves look very similar about the only diff is the one mom has the leaves are alot wider. The one that looks similar was the Philodendron 'Xanadu' Maybe that will help but i know the leaves on hers a alot wider.
I have a P. Xanadu and it has those kinda toothed leaves also. It's really hard to ID a plant correctly without really seeing it. If you are able to take a photo you could post it on the Aroid forum and I know some of the experts over there would be able to give you a correct ID. I've had some of my Philo's identified on that forum! It does sound like your plant is in the Aroid family from the description and I really am thinking it must be some variety of Philodendron. Hope you will be able to take a picture to post in the near future!
Sam's Club has very large decorative pots seasonally (they may be closing them out soon for this year and start up again early spring/late winter) that are very affordable. I've bought most of my large pots from there over the years (18 inch for around $10 and 22 for maybe $17 or so). The designs are different each year and are usually made of resin. They also get in glazed pots that are usually 3 nested ones to a set and go for around $60. Large pots = Sam's Club.
The largest pots I've seen at a chain store are at Home Depot Landscape Center (just dedicated to plants and landscaping). They had 37 inch and 42 inch double wall, terra cotta colored, plastic pots. The 42 inch may have been 4 foot high as well. You'd probably need a forklift to move one of these when loaded with soil though. I've thought about moving my bamboo up to one of these monsters but due to the size I'd want to make sure I had it in the right spot before I filled them.
yes, home depot and lowes, they both have huge pots in their outdoor gardening dept.
Did you find that pot yet?
One year, I needed a really large pot for a palm. The size I needed was *very* expensive to buy, even at WM, so I went to the local florist/greenhouse, as Lin suggested above, and asked him if he had one.
He mostly grows annuals for the spring trade, and only carries a few houseplants, so I doubted he'd have one, but he did! It was rather flimsy, kind of like the 'nursery pots' they sell houseplants in, but it certainly served the purpose.......best of all, he didn't need it so he *gave* it to me.
So, definitely worth a shot to contact your local greenhouse and ask!
PS, I'd bet you have a mature P. selloum.
I am so bad about hating to spend big bucks on pots too .... I have even used those large plastic kitty litter containers .... just drill holes in the bottom and plant them up! I know they'd look a bit nicer if I painted them ... keep saying I'm gonna do that! With 4 cats we go through a lot of litter. Hubby also goes through those large 5gal buckets that hold salt for his salt water aquarium. I've been collecting those to recycle as planters too. I must get out and paint some of them soon. It is so simple to do, just take the handles off, drill some holes and paint them. I have a couple of things that need re-potting so I really should get it done!
