Losing leaves

Coral Springs, FL

I have a huge plumeria that had hurricane damage right before we moved in 18 months ago. It lost all of its leaves over the winter, but it came back this spring with lots of leaves, but only a few blooms (red). I ordered special fertilizer for it which seemed to perk it up but still no blooms. I applied the fertilizer a month ago. This week about 20% of the leaves turned yellow and fell off. There is no sign of bugs or any discoloring except the yellow leaves. Now what? I really would like to see it thrive - it's the only one left standing after the hurricane. Two others broke off at the ground. I'd appreciate any advice!

The recent heat, coupled with less water than usual this time of year, has caused speedier leaf loss than normal. Plumeria lose their lower leaves gradually throughout the growing season. I think you have nothing to worry about.

Can you post a picture of your tree?

Thanks Dutch - I'll get a picture tomorrow.

I agree with Hetty. It probably just needs more water.

I'm using something called Nutri Star plumeria food. Someone recommended it in the Plumeria forum. I ordered it from www.nelsonplantfood.com. I'm not sure how great it is - I'm still not getting flowers. I get lots of buds - they just don't develop.
I did take ya'lls advice and watered deeply over the weekend. There were a lot less leaves on the ground this morning. I still haven't taken a picture - I forgot to charge the camera. This tree is huge - way taller than the house. I'm not sure how old it is, since it was planted by the previous owner. I'm thinking about planting a couple more. I've been concentrating on tropical fruit trees, but I'd like to add a couple of nice plumeria. Any suggestions as to what ones to plant that would grow quickly and give me lots of fragranct flowers?

You can make new plants from your big tree fairly easily by just rooting the cuttings. Otherwise, Aztec Gold is a favorite in Florida, along with Miami Rose and Key West Pink. If you are near Florida Colors Nursery in Homestead, you should make an appointment to go see them, and Luc and Carol will help you to pick out some great ones to suit your needs: http://www.floridacolors.com/

Thanks Clare - I'll look for those. Maybe a trip to Homestead if it cools down a little.
