Too Hot!!!!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

100 degrees in the shade! Yesterday was even hotter. I went to Whirlin Waters yesterday and the water in all the pools was like bath water. While walking in my backyard barefoot, the ground/grass was so hot it was burning the bottom of my feet!

Everything in my garden is drooping badly .. thankfully they perk up in the evening.

How is everyone else faring?

X...We're getting a break today. It's only supposed to be 103 instead of the 104 that it was yesterday, lol! I'd check my thermometer, but I think it's melted...I've had to water lots since so many of my things are new this year. I actually planted stuff in the heat yesterday and then pulled out a chair and watered slowly with the hose so it wouldn't just run off. 'Course I had to get wet, too:-))
The kicker was that it rained in downtown Raleigh, 6 miles from here, and we didn't get one drop:-(( We did get the thunder, though so we had to live with scaredy dog whimpering and running about...All that aggravation and no water. Sigh!

How is the humidity with all that heat??? I can handle the temps but if the humidity is high and you are having those temps, that could be dangerous.

Be careful and stay inside everyone....

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Uggh, the humidity is awful and is pushing the heat index in many areas over 115F. I know that in Charleston and Savannah they set records for highs and for highest lows yesterday.

But, at least we haven't lost power! (Knock on wood.)

Jenny

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Eeeek! don't even think that!

X

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

If you have air conditioners be careful that you don't have them turned down lower then absolutely needed. The motors are not use to the high temps either and can sieze up. That is the biggest problem with new comers here in Las Vegas. The temps get to the 115+ and they have the air turned down to 65 or so and the motors seize.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

I just want some rain!!! lol starting to snap here....or clouds. Clouds would be helpful....I kept hearing the thunder yesterday too, and I was glued to the radar, hitting refresh every few minutes. My sons think I am nuts..."staring at that screen isn't going to make it rain"...

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I woke up in the middle of the night and checked the outside thermometer - 85 degrees at 3 a.m. Yikes it is hot!

Lots of plants are losing their buds from the heat but nothing is drying out because the dew point is so high the air is saturated with moisture.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Lol Tiger .. I do the same thing .. stay glued to the radar and try to will those cells to summerville .. never seems to work.

X

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

X, the reason I woke up last night was because there was steady, non stop lightening, about every 5 seconds for more than an hour. It was driving me crazy because we didn't get a drop of rain.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

lol its almost an insult when the cells come so close and you can hear the thunder and then...nothing. You know-normally when we have such a dry June/July, it almost always will be a wet August-and I am not seeing that so far this month. I bet so far this summer, that this is the dryest summer that we have had.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Ardesia, I was up late watching that cell pass to the SW of me heading in your direction. It came close enough to cause a slight temperature drop and some wind, but no rain.

I think it's high time we got Al Gore involved in our climate problems! Hell, he invented the Internet, discovered Global Warming, etc., etc., Gotta believe our heat wave is somehow related to Global Warming, so he should be able to fix it! Man, it's hot! But it's been a lot hotter many times before...and they didn't have air conditioning in those days! And the vast majority made it through ok, as we will this time...

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

As much as I dislike gore, I'm sick to death of the misinformation concerning the "al gore invented the internet". That's total hooey created by wolf blitzer.

http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.asp

The bottom line is that if it were not for al gore and his earlyl initiatives, we'd probably all be still logging on to tymnet to get to daves. Gore really was very instrumental in helping to create the internet we know today.

Whew .. it's still hot out there. It's 10:30 at night and in the 80's! The picture on the right is the temp and humidity in the greenhouse which is wide open.

Hey Carat have you been in SC when it's this hot? It's not like Vegas. The humidity is so bad you can only see about a mile, kind of a thing you have to experience for yourself. LOL. I set my AC to 76 in warm weather, these people who put down in the 60's are nuts. You'll never build up heat tolerance like that.

Ardesia I was disappointed with all the lightening and no rain. You must have gotten the same show as I.

Vegas,NV Filbert, SC(Zone 7b)

Yes, Core, I spent last summer there and would laugh at church when the ladies would sit outside with a fan saying it hot enough to cook a pig. I turned to one and told her that it was humid enough to steam a pig over an open fire but no where near hot enough to cook it.

If I had a choice I would choose the temps of 120+ here without the humidity over 104 with humidity there. But since we get the dry heat reaching over 110 degrees for an average of 40 days out of the summer over SC reaching temps over 90 with the same in humidity for less then 15 per year. I vote for SC. Either way it is miserable and will stay inside during both.....

I hope the weather cools down and the humidity lowers for everyone.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I moved to NC from southeastern NM down near El Paso TX. I thought those tourist Tshirts with the skeleton sunbathing on a lounge chair with the caption "Yes, but it's a DRY heat!" were so stupid. Then I moved to NC. The humidity makes bad heat much worse:LOL: One of my friends called right after I got here (in June) and asked about the heat/weather. I could only come up with "Imagine getting off an airconditioned plane and walking outside to 95 degree weather only to have someone throw a hot wet wool blanket over your head. That's what it's like here!" I gave up trying to style my hair, ponytail is standard now=)

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

dmac-

I see we have the same hair style. Although, I alternate between those big alligator clips, too. There is no hope of having normal hair in this weather. I have wavy hair and tend to look like Bozo the Clown in the humidity. Elegant- not!

The NWS said our heat index was officially 118F here yesterday. I'm melting...

Jenny

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Well, I think we all ought to move to the California coast. Warm days, cool evenings. Hey, earthquakes would be a piece of cake compared to our humidity and the extreme dry heat of the southwest. (Sorry dmac, I have dry skin and no matter how much water I consume, usually withing 24 hours my skin starts peeling like a sunburn when I am in NM or AZ.) As bad as the heat is this week I still think we are better off than the folks that have 3' of snow in the winter. This too shall pass..........

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

"The humidity is so bad you can only see about a mile, kind of a thing you have to experience for yourself."

Hmm. Must depend on where you are in SC.The humidity here (upstate in Pelzer) was only 24% yesterday. It wasn't bad at all. Of course, last year I was in S Florida, and the humidity there is much worse. 69% would seem low, compared to the 78-98% that is so common there.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I have to agree with you about the snow. I think it is so funny here when we get a few inches and people come into where I work wanting to buy tire chains:LOL:

Spontaneous peeling would definitely suck! I'm pale and crisp up to a nice lobster red then it peels all away with absolutely no evidence of a tan left behind. I am officially tan resistant:lol:

I've been up since 6:30 and had all the containers watered by 7. I'm wondering what I'm going to do with my new iris. Simply to hot to do much with them right now. I might pot them up until I get their home ready. Luckily it seems like the super hot days don't stay for long. I

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

dmac085 -- We live in Albuquerque and are thinking of moving to the Raleigh, NC area or perhaps somewhere in SC in a few years when DH retires. I have family in that area and would like to be closer to them. I can adjust to humidity but am not so sure about DH.

Ardesia -- We left California in 2001 because the housing costs and freeway gridlock became impossible. We like the weather in Albuquerque but really have never settled in here. Winters are usually pretty mild but last year we had over 20 inches of snow in just one weekend and hope that doesn't happen again.

Do you all have a/c in your houses? I think I can live just about anywhere with a/c!

June

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

When I lived in NM we had those evaporative coolers, called "swamp coolers". They sit on top of your house, connected to a vent system. There are straw filled panels on each side, water is pumped up to a sprayer device called a spider and it soaks all the panels then the air is drawn in through the wet panels, cooled and blown into the house through the vents. It can only work in areas with very low to no humidity.

Now that I'm in NC, I am a huge fan of central air:lol: I don't know if I would be happy without it at this point. Oddly enough, I don't mind driving in hot weather without the AC as long as windows are all down. I'm thinking of trying to buy a small house next year and other than a nice yard to garden in, central air is my only must have:lol:

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Ardesia: I'm with you, "I still think we are better off than the folks that have 3' of snow in the winter."
I complain about the heat for a couple of weeks each year, but not too much because I'll happily accept it in exchange for mild winters with no snow. This time of year is always the worst, but seems to me that only the 'dog days" - late July and Aug are really HHH. The rest of the time I'm pretty happy.
Having said all that, there is definitely truth to the "but it's a dry heat" argument.

X: Did you have the "almost" t-storm this morning? Round 8 or so, it was cloudy and windy as if a storm was coming, and for a while, it was quite pleasant out. But - - came to nothing - - sun came out. No rain. Wind died. Same old, same old. You?
Deb

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I slept through it, but when I got up and checked the radar, I saw it south of us. I immediately looked outside in hopes of a wet sidewalk, but no. Sigh .. maybe today.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

dmac085 -- Yes, we have a swamp cooler now in the house that we lease and it works well, except for the few times when it's humid. Then you are just sucking more moisture into the house.

June

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi June!
If you are thinking about moving to Raleigh, there are lots of places right outside of Raleigh as well. In Garner, I am about 6 miles to downtown...Not bad. Humidity aside, either of the Carolians are great places to be.
Bev

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Bev. Over time I'll be visiting my sister who lives in Pinehurst and we'll be exploring. I want to be in reasonable driving distance to her, but not in her back yard. ;-)

June

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

Although I am homesick for NM sometimes (it really is a beautiful state), I'm happy here and like Bev said except for the humidity it's a pretty great area of the country to live in. As far as severe weather goes all I can say that I've experienced in the 14 yrs I've lived here is some wind/rain weather attached to a hurricane and I have to say that the ice storms sort of freak me out. Not much snow to speak of over all those years.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

No storms here Deb, it was cloudy gray and the temp dropped to 81 but not a drop or any breeze either. There has been so much moisture in the air; nothing is dried up, not even containers in the full sun.

Can you just imagine a swamp cooler here on the southeast coast. It would quickly mildew and then circulate it all over the house.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Mmmmm. Yeah, that wouldn't work. :)
It's another lovely HHH and sunny day...
Bright side: No rain or clouds? We can see the meteor shower tonight. ;->

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

I went to college in Buffalo NY so I have seen some snow. I would go with heat any day. Basically I get about a week a year of 100 degrees and I have no problem with 90 or so. The thing with the snow is it goes on for a long time and everything looks bleak. I've been out west and I think that dry heat stuff is much more dangerous. You lose water at a huge rate and just prune up.

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

june_nmexico,
I was born in Roswell then raised in the Carolinas. There is something special about the Carolinas (a lot of state allegiance whichever Carolina. This heat this year is worse than I remember, but it will pass. The friendliness of the people, the cost of living, the year round temps make it all worth it.

CoreHHI, I lived on HHI for 15 years (Sea Pines) and left in 1993 (never should have, but that's the way it goes), then to N Myrtle Beach for a couple of years and finally at Sunset Beach, NC right at the SC/NC line but always on the coast. Our traffic is minimal compared to HHI nowadays, but I still miss and keep in touch with some old very good friends. I can't believe the way it's grown since I left. I wish we were a little more "Low Country-ish" here, but real estate is a lot less expensive and things, in general, are a little less expensive. But I wouldn't mind that extra 5 degrees warmer in the winter...LOL.

I think they ought to make a law to remove August from the calendar no matter where you live!

Try to stay cool all,
Barbara

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Well we just had some rain where i live .. lasted about 15 minutes .. when it quit I ran outside and checked the rain gauge. We got a little less than 1/10th of an inch .. looking at the radar that's all we're going to get here in Summerville.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

...and look out now, here comes the humidity! So sorry but we are there too!

BTW ~ X ~ the S. onrateri seeds made a lovely foliage plant with delicate tiny pastel blue blooms. Very pretty ~ thank you!

If you or anyone else should plant it, this Scute will also spread by roots. In a pot and plantlets are sprouting thru the drainholes. Most delightful. : ))

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Looks like we got about an inch of rain last night- in a half hour! As usual for this time of year it came with a vengeance- high wind, thunder, lightening and torrential rain. Mother Nature is such a drama queen! ;*>

Not complaining, though! I'm very happy my rain dance finally worked.

Jenny

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

could you come up here Jenny??? lol You obviously dance better than me!!
