H. lacunosa 'Heart Leaf'

Long Beach, CA

Does anyone know if the little heart shaped leaf lacunosa is the same one as DL's lacunosa 'Giant' (IML 1813)? I got that one in the last DL order and it looks just like my heart shaped leaf lacunosas. Just wondering if they are the same, and if so...I wonder why it is named 'Giant'?

Funny...my 'giant' from DL didn't look at all like the heart leaf. Ted Green says the 'Heart Leaf' I gave him reverted to H. lacunosa ssp. lacunosa... so it is simply an unstable clone.

There seem to be two different plants being distributed as lacunosa "heart-shaped leaf", one looks like, as Carol said, a sport of lacunosa var. lacunosa, with identical flowers, the other seems to be a different collection, with larger leaves and much larger flowers. There are pictures of both in the last Stemma.
Marcy, how 'bout a photo of the plant you got from DL as "giant"?

Marcy, I have the lacunosa "giant" IML 1813 also, but its leaves are not shaped like a heart. I was really hoping for the larger leaves like described in his catalog, but so far it just looks like a lacunosa to me. The leaves are a bit longer, and a very, very, nice dark green though.

I wonder if David L. may have got mixed up & sent me a wrong cutting? Everyone makes mistakes ya know.
I noticed the comparison in Stemma, but since there was no picture of that one but you stated that it is supposed to have larger leaves that are like regular lacunosa, that is what got me to wondering if I had the wrong one from David. However since there is only a few leaves on my new cutting, I was thinking maybe they are just small end leaves & will grow some bigger ones later.
None of my heart leafs have reverted back to regular ones. I have a couple of different sources I got them from. One is Cindy (calicat)..one other was Ann W. I love these little plants. They are very cute and grow well.
I will try to get a picture later...I still have "camera issues", but I think I can get one.

Here is a picture of my aff. lacunosa "giant" IML 1813. I also took a closer picture, as I noticed that it really has some nice veining in the leaves.

Is this what yours looks like Marcy?

Here is a nice blurry picture of the leaves......oh well, some of us were meant to take awesome pictures (Ann, Mark, Carol....) others of us, not so much.

Now I am really thinking he made a mistake. I will try to get some pics & maybe I can get a correct one with my next order. I am not ordering this fall however...was going to wait until next year. Oh well.

I think that growing conditions mean a lot!!! Sara's has wonderful deep color with darker margins...mine doesn't and I grow mine in high light. Gotta go check it.

I received a H. lacunosa 'Borneo' from Sweden and it looks like nothing. Anyone else have this?

I agree with Carol in thinking that growing conditions have a lot to do with it. For instance I have what is quickly becoming a very nice plant of H. elliptica that I got from Carol. The leaves that were on it when I received it were more short and round. All of the new leaves ( 9 sets) are a bit longer and seem to be more oval than round.

I've had this happen on other hoyas as well. For instance I have H. callistophylla from David Liddle. Not one of the new leaves that it's formed since i've had it match any of the existing leaves that it had when David sent it and they're all on the same vine.

Carol I have H. lacunosa "Borneo" that I got from Paul Shirley. It grew well up until just recently and now all of a sudden seems to be taking a turn for the worse if you know what I mean!

OK...here are the pics of my little lacunosa that I got in my DL order labeled as aff. lacunosa "giant" IML 1813.
The last pic I post is one of a regular heart leaf next to it. Looks pretty much the same to me.

Marcy, the two leaves that you are showing do look very much the same. I don't have a lacunosa "hear leaf", but I do have the "giant" from David L., and my giant looks the same as yours......

Don't know what to tell you. I do think that the lacunosa "giant" is more succulent than a regular lacunosa, and I do like it better. Although, I have decided that lacunosa in general is one that I can live without, though nothing seems to smell as nice........
