My mother found this young bird in her yard in Maryland; it died unfortunately. It looked somewhat like a cardinal to me. Can anyone identify it please? Thanks for your help.
CLOSED: Can you help me identify this bird?
My guess would be that it is some type of exotic pet store finch that may have escaped from its cage.
Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata castanotis from Australia. A very popular cage bird world-wide. There are many "man-made" varieties.
Actually an adult male - the females and young ones don't have the orange cheek patch.

Thats ashame. My parents had a pair of these, their very cute.
judging by the tail, it could be a yellow-bill cuckoo.
It's a Zebra Finch--someones escaped pet. I used to have some of these.
Jimbo
The only Zebra Finch I've ever seen was in Hawaii. They were released there and are doing extremely well (tooooo well, some may think).
