Hi From Pass Christian, Gulf Coast MS

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

I am a Canadian, and have lived in beautiful Pass Christian, MS for the last 4 years. After Katrina, my yard became somewhat of a blank slate, and since then has blossomed into a beautiful tropical oasis. Gardening in this sub tropical zone is way too much fun!
But all these exotic plants down here, I need lots of help! Have found lots of useful information on Daves Garden Website, so decided to join the group! I will try and post at least one of the pictures of my gardens.

Kett: I notice in the pic of your beautiful home that you have slate on your front porch. I'm using slate (have to choose the color by Wednesday!!) on my deck and around my pool. I've had people say on DG that there are 2 kinds of slate: one is slippery and the other is not. (I really think the ones they say are "slippery" are the TILES that just look like real slate, but I'm not sure.)

Can you tell me your experience with it? Slippery when wet?

Thanks much!!!

You home and garden I see are just gorgeous.

Connie,

Thanks so much for the compliment, we are very pleased with our house as we lost the original one to Katrina.

I am new to DG and not sure if I simply reply to the Welcome Mat or send a note directly to you, so I will start by replying to the welcome mat note.

The slate is very high grade and thick, and comes in various thicknesses (which is difficult for the tile setter, make sure you get someone familiar with slate) Its called Peacock and has a lot of beautiful colors in it. It also has a lot of texture, as in, it is not smooth, so no we have not found it slippery when wet. I can forward you the name of the supplier if you are interested.

Cheers

Gk: Thanks for both this and the personal D-mail. Usually people just reply in the thread, as people read them and are curious as to the answer. I have used the D-mail if something is totally off-topic; for example, the person who posted is from Pass Christian and you have a relative who lives there and want to know...blah blah....

By the way...my DH works in Pascagoula every week Monday-Thursday at noon! I was there this summer (we have a leased house in Ocean Springs) for a week and passed through Pass Christian when going to Mobile to see a friend! :)

Kett: Welcome! You are in for a treat. This is a wonderful place full of so many generous people.

Your new garden is quite beautiful. I wouldn't know there had been a hurricane. By the time Katrina got to Jackson, MS, it was a Hurricane One, and bad enough. I watched your coastline being crushed to threads. It was a very sad time.

Let us at DG tell you about our gardening experiences. We are the best plant advice you can find in the south. Martha

Mwp,

Thanks to all for the wonderful welcomes! I have had lots of good feedback and info since subscribing.
Its nice to hear from a fellow Mississippian gardener. Yes things have gotten a lot better since Katrina, but still a long ways to go, every little plants helps!

Just wanted to welcome you to Dave's and extend an invitation to Mid South Forum. You will find wonderful friendly people there and quite a few from Miss. It helps to find a home forum with people from your area to answer questions.
Anyway WELCOME TO DAVES Cindy
