Ponders in Colorado?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

My son, who recently moved to the Boulder area was wondering if ponds do well in the Boulder/Denver area. How do they make out during the winter and can you keep the fish alive if the pond is deep enough? Are they difficult to dig because of the rocky soil? Thanks for any info.

Hi ardesia- I am a new ponder and a new resident of Colorado. I have read lots and lots about ponds in Colorado and there is a huge water gardening contingent here. Plenty of hardy plants to use and the fish can go dormant during the winter with a de-icer to leave breathing/detoxifying room. In my recent experience hand-digging my pond with no husband-help, it was by no means easy- but it wasn't impossible either. I got it done in about 3 days worth of working. The clay sure wasn't fun to get through, though.

On the Rocky Mountain gardening forum, we have been talking a lot about ponds and I am sure you could find some good information there if you wanted to look. Hope this helps!

Thanks, it does help, good to know it works in that climate. I'll be sure to look in at the RM forum more often.
