How in the world do you get your hollyhocks to grow so beautiful?
Mine get all eaten up by catapillar.
I am jealous!
Aline
Don't be. Several of our very threatened butterflies lay their eggs on plants of the mallow genus. Like swallowtails, for example. Those caterpillars are very precious!
If you look closely at the pic..the leaves of mine were eaten on also... I often spray my gardens with hot pepper spray that I make...
Peggy
Thanks Greenjay. I was just made aware of that a couple weeks ago when I was doing some reading. I need to put something in front to cover the loss of follage.
Those hollyhock are still beautiful.
I have had some wonderful luck starting hollyhock seed the past couple weeks. I have seedlings for peachy keen and a double white and antwerp. I am very pleased, needless to say.
Aline

Sometimes i have to wonder if i am doing the right thing sarting this flower garden..... i know nothing about flowers at all....... nothing, zippo, notta...the big goose egg........LOLOL
marierose
Marierose,
I just started at least three dozen hollyhock. I am zone 5. What I plan to do is mulch them good after the ground freezes so they don't heave and dry out.
Try both times. I think the fresher seeds sprout better.
I don't think you can go wrong starting a garden. It's part of the learning curve!

Anyone, may I also have just a few of your HH seeds if I send you a sase? This year, a lone HH come up and profusely bloomed the most beautiful vibrant red flowers. Once these are collected and dried, I will have a very few to exchange after I contribute to a couple of rr's. Since I am just beginning to collect and exchange seeds, I find this is just another facet of the wonderful hobby of gardening.
Peggy, what a great name - I'm Peggy also :) I have Rose Queen cleome seeds for trade and I'd love some hollyhock seeds. These cleomes got to be seven feet tall in my garden this year.
Peggy

Hi Peggy,
I would love some of your hollyock seed....I had some planted this spring but they grew to close to where the water comes off the house in a down pour and they got smached to the ground in our one heavy (and almost only) storm....I did get to appreciate their flowers but no seeds for this year....
Thanks plmk.
Gail
ps I have saved Cleome seed in purple and white from this summer....they grew great. Would you like some of these.
I sent you all D-Mail...
Peggy
