Found a new wildflower

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Seems like I find new wildfowers every year. This one was by the river in the muck in the middle of our trail. It looks like Lobelia, but I am not sure. Any suggestions or hints? It may have washed in from up river somewhere early this year.

was going to say dayflower or gentians but the flower looks more like a snapdragon But its a great find hope it comes back for you next year!

Gloria, I was stumped. We have the closed genitians here, so pretty. The flower does look like the Lobelia but the leaves are fatter, toothed and kind of smooth. I have 3 wildflower books and I am stumped.
The flower is about 1" each. DH drove over the top of the plant with his quad. Made him go around on the way back. This was the only one I saw. Too scared to move it, so the trail is now closed for a while.

I'm betting on Great Lobelia [Lobelia siphilitica].

That was my guess when I saw the picture and read about summer blooming, swamp etc. But, in one book, it showed leaves that were completely different, so I was unsure.
The pictures in your link look pretty darned close. I would say you are right.
Sure is a pretty flower. I hope it spreads, because I would like to see it again. The color is amazing.

I share your passion for the woods. Every time we go we find something different. Can't wait to get back!!!

I walk in the woods every day and something is always different.
I also have been seeing different wildflowers every year. I know were not there before. Sometimes I think the birds must seed them, sometimes it is the right weather conditions. Sure is fun to find new things, esp flowers, moss etc.

I've been advised that there are so many non native wildflowers in Michigan, if you want to ID some of them you almost need a European field guide.

That is good advice. Esp when stuff floats down the river. I got a nice plant of paper whites that way.
