Is there any way you could take a closer pic of one of them? There's the Bordered Patch that feeds on plants in the Aster family, but they have some orangey brown on them.

The Common Buckeye cats are black.

these are all black

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Ahhh, could you've been thinking of the 'buckmoth' .. fly_girl -?-

They are quite similar .. and I was heading in the same direction, until I checked my book, & saw that these lil guys (below) were gregarious also. BUT, my book doesn't even mention cone flowers as a food plant!

I'll betcha, these guys are your pretty black babies that are enjoying the delectable coneflower leaves!

Be sure to take a thorough read of the text content ..

Now, I've gotta make a point to check my cone flowers tomorrow!
Thank you, sticksNstones!!

Magpye, I bet those are them....the Silvery Checkerspot....good job!

Now, what can she put them on? That's the challenge...something that she won't mind being chewed to bits lol

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Just so I'm clear - when we say "coneflower" are we talking echinacea or rudbeckia? I have both and of course I want to go check them now. I also wanted to make sure everyone was basing their IDs on the correct plant.

Good point Melanie....I assumed....and you know what they say about assuming....

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Believe me, I've learned that lesson well!

Quoting:
Common foodplants: Especially wing-stem and sunflowers, but also reported on aster, crown-beard, and black-eyed susans.

echinacia

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Well, now I'm going to have to keep a closer eye because I have seen damage to the leaves of my echinacea but I always thought it was grasshoppers. I'll have to pay attention to them.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

how can i get rid of them?

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Hmmm, my endeavor of aid is done ..
((Thank you, fly_girl))
G'nite folks ..

Woe now hold on Magpye...we have to figure out what we can put them on!

Sticks, let me do some research and see what we could try.

So, do you think they look more like the Silvery Checkerspot?
