I was at Plants Delight yesterday for the SE palm society meeting and Tony opened the nursery up for us and there was about 50 of these Siam Ruby bananas right as you walk in the first grhouse!! You bet I got one! Very nice size too. He is having Agristarts tissue culture them for him. And to think that I almost didn't go because the weather was going to be so hot and humid....lol
What a score!!
I think that I just got an new addiction! Tropical agaves (or...agaves not hardy here). This is Agave 'Kara Stripes'. I love the bright limey yellow with the green margins on the leaves. I also love the fact that it doesn't hurt me when I touch it!! lol The leaves are smooth and rubber-like. It will be gorgeous when it gets bigger
I just love that nanner! Here's another link about it.... The agave, what kind is it? What a fun "meeting" you had ;)

tigerlily, those are BIG scores. good for you.
thanks AuntB for the thread-its because I saw that thread that I knew what those babies were when I saw them! I don't know what kind of agave it is-are there different types? I don't know anything about agaves except that they are cool looking and that Jose Cuevero is related to them lol I want some more of them.
I need more of those kinds of meetings! It was rough :)
Vossner-its always a good day when you find plants like that-thats what makes up for all the hours we spend watering them (well-maybe not you guys in Texas-is it any dryer now?)
tigerl. it's drier now. Of course, I love it anytime I don't have to drag the stupid hose around.
It seems like its either one or the other...I would not want the amt of rain that you have had, I have one large bed that was not graded properly and half of it will hold water forever if we get a lot of rain. I should have taken out all of the plants and redone the bed, but that seemed like a lot of work, so I dug deeper and put 5" of pebbles under the plant, but a trop storm thru here would make it a lake for a few days. On the other hand-I am so sick and tired of this drought we are having and all the watering that I have to do.
Did you notice any damage to your tropicals from all the rain? I think you mentioned a ginger (?) that was suffering?
I haven't had much damage compared to others. The one ginger had two shoots and one is in pretty bad shape, the other is fine and I think it will survive. My casualties have been salvia, vinca and stuff I can easily replace.
The most curious thing to me is that the rains have kept temps in my area about 5-10 deg. cooler than usual, so my tropicals are behind schedule with respect to height and bloom. OK w/ me, just noteworthy. On the other hand, the general landscape doesn't have the "fried" look so typical of this time of year. All is green, including the weeds, lol.
Awesome score, Terry! Congrats! Those are very beautiful. I've lost my drive to acquire new plants. New plants just look like more work to me now! LOL!
Nery, you are so funny. I laughed about the "stupid hose" comment. We are having one of the driest years on record. We've had no rainfall in a really long time. I'm with Terry in that I hate this drought we are having, and I'm with you in that I hate dragging around the stupid hose!
Waaaaaaaa, I was supposed to go to that meeting and at the last minute had to cancel my plans. So happy you got to go and that beautiful 'nana was quite a find. Hope you had a good time; SEPS folks are a great bunch of people. Did you get anything from their plant sale/swap?
I can promise you that I am not loving dragging that hose around either! I have, like 5 hoses at all the beds and places that I water and then two main hoses from either side of the house that I use to get the water to the other hoses. Nothing like a drought to bring out the crybaby soup.....lol
Clare, I thought about the fact that I would have to bring these plants inside (like I need anymore to bring in for the winter), but it was so hot out-winter seems so far off and I had to have them! I just love that agave-I want more lol
Ardesia-I was sorry not to have met you there-we even got lunch! It was extremely hot and humid though, and I think the big fans that they had set up were the highlight!
I threw some plants in the back of the car for the swap, but when it came time to trade/sell I never got a chance to see what everyone had. As soon as I opened the back door, people were there offering me money! They didn't have any plants to trade, so I said ok. I had 3 people at a time either giving me money, taking change or asking questions. I just held out the hand with the money and they just put the money in or took out the change-by the time they all left, I think all the swapping was done and I never got to leave where my car was. I think it was spread out over the parking lot.
I was amazed at how far people came for it-Penn, NJ, Delaware, Tenn etc. Everyone was very nice, I had a good time-thanks so much for letting me know about it.
tigerlily, thanks for the head's up on the agave...what a pretty name..lol
Ahhhh, if only that musa were hardy..lol
Oh, now I am really envious. Just heard about another event at Tony's place. Horticulture magazine is having a seminar there on (I think) the 19 - 20 of October. I do not have the info in front of me but I remember the speakers were ones I would like to listen to. Maybe I can make that one and pick up one of those awesome bananas.
ardesia, you know about the roundup/open house on Sept. 8th? Would be great if you could make it.
I did see that one but that is a busy weekend for us. Thanks for thinking of me.
I am envious. :) I am waiting for three sabal minor "McCurtains" and a yucca rostrata from PDN. :) They're holding off on shipping until the root systems are developed enough, but I know they're worth waiting for, so I am *trying* to be patient. :)))
Those Siam Ruby nanners are gorgeous!
-Joe
I can't imagine a more fun or expensive day than a trip to Plants Delight!! Those are just gorgeous.
Johanna
Joe-you know I never realized until lately that the McCurtain (sp?) is a var of Sabal minor-no wonder everyone talks about how cold hardy it is! I always assumed it was a trunking sabal.
Flicker-you got the expensive part of the day right!! Its like going to the grocery store....I went there for one palm-just one, and ended up with a lot more!
That agave is really special. I guess I have to get one.
Johanna
