My Hoya Carnosa

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I know it's not a very interesting variety, just common, but I've had it in the same pot for 32 years, and it's been blooming like crazy this year for the first time. Pics could be better, but you get the idea. I'm very proud of her.

32 years??? Wow! Did you think it was ever going to happen?? You must be so thrilled with it!

Just curious, but I had a pubicalyx that took over ten years to bloom, and I kind of think if I had kept it in better and consistant conditions, especially lighting, it would have bloomed sooner - was this plant always in the same place? Was it really small when you got it?

Congrats to you on your blooms - I still waiting to get my first hoya blossoms, too.

Wow! 32 years and finally a bloom. I sure hope mine blooms sooner. I got my cutting from a friend who has had hers for ages and it has never bloomed. She said she cuts off the new shoots every year. I am not going to trim mine to see if that helps it bloom faster. Tell us the history of 32 years with it!

It really isn't written in stone, the amount of time it takes for a carnosa or pubicalyx to bloom...I have one that took over 10 years, and another of the same exact variety that took about 5 years, and I know there are people who have gotten flowers in less time - but I think the plant needs to be mature for the most part, environmental conditions being very important too!

I'm not positive, but I think I have heard that the Tricolor variety, which is what I think this one is, is one of the ones that can take a bit longer. But no matter what you do, DON'T TRIM!!!!!

I didn't mean to say this is the first year it's bloomed. It's just the first year I've had REPEAT blooming! When I got it it was a small plant. That's why I put it in small terra cotta hen pot. It just fit, and it's still in that small pot. Somewhere I remember reading that they like to be pot bound, and I've learned they don't mind being neglected. I've had it several different places since then, many moves, many different exposures. But always puny blooming. Maybe one or two blooms a year.

I've had it under lights now for the last 7 years. I've pruned more in the last couple of years than I did before. And I've always added a little potting soil annually, and Osmocote. But this year it's bloomed now about three or four times, several blossoms. Go figure! I have no idea why it's decided to try to reproduce itself so strenuously. LOL

LOL! I guess we all misread your meaning? Which Osmacote do you use? I was just reading up on fertilizers and was leaning toward buying the Osmacote that is for acid loving plants for my hoyas.

Indoor Outdoor 19-6-12. I use it on everything. Works pretty well.

Thanks!
