Stupid Ginger question

Hillside, IL(Zone 5a)

I went and bought my first Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet 'Variegata') and have a dumb question. Can I treat this plant like a Dahlia or Calla when it comes to winter i.e. let the foliage blacken after first frost, cut foliage down and lift and store roots until next season?
Google search of the internet comes up with nothing useful on this subject.
Any help would be appreciated.

Its not a stupid question at all, in fact I think its smart that you ask before it gets cold!

In your zone, I would dig it up, as is, before any freezes and pot it up/put some soil around any exposed roots and then let it go dormant. If you have a spot in the house where it could get some sun, you could keep it watered and keep all/most of the foliage going
