Storms and Dogs

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

Hello All,
I'm sure this problem has been highlighted before, but last night was a biggie. We had one of the most violent and lingering thunderstorms I can ever remember. Two of my guys, Paisley, the Dobe and Demijen, the GSP are quite frightened of t-storms and find a quiet place to hide in the house. This has never really given us problems...up until last night.
The storm came on really fast, so I shut down the computer and walked around the house closing windows. During the course of this activity, I noted that Bosco and Holly followed me around happily and when I reached downstairs once again, I checked on Demi in his favorite hiding place...the downstairs bathroom. It was then I realized I didn't see Paisley.
I KNEW she was in the house, but she usually curls up under a table and waits out the storm quietly. Curious, I once again walked thru all the rooms of the house and did not see her. Now, I was beginning to become frightened. HOW can I not find a 70# Doberman in my house?? Again, I went through the house; no Paisley.
The storm is in full force now, right overhead. I look under the beds, in the closets, the upstairs bathroom. I open all the closets; peer inside with a flashlight. I grab cookies and call her name over the thunder...and even Demi comes out...still no Paisley. I'm in tears...how could she possibly get out of the house???
Finally, I call a friend (it's 9pm) and he comes over. I hang up the phone and run upstairs once again....by now, the 15th time I think. No Paisley.
I run downstairs again and check the barn off the kitchen (for the third time)...nothing. When I get back in the house proper, I walk into the livingroom, and Paisley is walking toward me.
Mark arrives and I totally lose it. All I could think of was she got out somehow and I'd never see my baby again. Me, who does all this training, gives advice and adores her animals like childres....cannot find her alpha girl in her own house.
Mark leaves and we lose power. I decide to go to bed. I had to lead Paisley by leash to the bedroom. She's hyperventalating and totally terrifyed. It's hot; I finally get her on the bed with me and she's literally shaking the bed with her breathing. Hours go by, still the thunder is enough to awaken the dead.
Never have I seen a dog so agitated by thunder. I'm worried she may be having some kind of cardiac event....but finally, at 2:30am, the storm passes. Her breathing moderates...and she goes to sleep.
I do have Rescue Remedy and Melatonin, but they didn't touch her. I know she knew how upset I was and that didn't help her.
Is there anyway to calm a dog so frightened? Paisley is my angel and the light of my life; I was so frightened she was having a crisis that was life-threatening, as I've never seen her so upset before. Any ideas on massage or comfort for her??? Sorry so long...it was frightening. Leslie
