I have 3 RI reds, (17 wk. old) I have three australorpes, (15 or 16 wk. old) and 3 araucannas, (12 - 14 wk. old...^ of the 8 eggs ,,,which ever layed,,, have been double yoke, large eggs... Only 2 have been small, and single yoke! I s this normal?
I remember ,,as a kid,,,my grandma always had double yoke brown eggs,,,she got them from some local egg farm near Roswell, Ga.....And ,,as a kid ,I seem to remember that they were marked on carton as ,,,double yoke! Am I just crazy? Or have I got some double yoke hen factories?
Hey!!! I have a question for you chicken raisers! If a fertilized, double yoke egg , was to hatch! What would the chick look like? Would it have two heads, four wings, or four leggs,,,maybe it would just be normal, except it has two chicken souls!
Nevermind ,,,I don't care anyway! I would eat a four legged ,or four winged chicken,,,just the same!
Just kinda curious though!
Maybe ,,I should try to hatch a couple?
Double your pleasure,double your fun!
Double yoke eggs,,,Kinda puzzled???
doubles are normal, i believe. my only pullet to do that was my standard turken. she started laying rubber eggs, lol. they were medium sized and had the shell and looked perfect in every way except the shell wasn't hard it was a rubber skin. we had to give her oyster grit she never layed another that way after the second one.
after her first week of laying which i think was 20 weeks old, she laid a double but looked torpedo shaped. we were in awe it was huge. i savered it for 2 days and couldn't stand it. it was my first good egg from her so by golly i made me an egg samich. it was beautiful to see in the pan with the golden yellow not pale like store bought. it was so big it filled 2 samiches when done. best eggs i ever ate!! from then on she laid 2 doubles a week. if she did she skiped a day of laying the next day if it was a single she laid every day those turned to large tinted eggs. she was my first and only layer at time and with those doubles and 7 of us it made enough everyone could eat a fresh egg every morning.
as far as i know they usually die during incubation because there is not enough room and they die when they run out before hatch time. and 2 chicks can't share the same air sac as it doesn't have enough air for both. they only way it would live is if it was a siamese twin effect not 2 seperate yolks and 2 seperate air sacs. like it would have to be a joined yolk with one air cell. i have seen pics of them like that on the riplies believe it or not site. they show 4 legged and double headed chickens it is really neat to see as most always die before hatch.
check it out sometime,lol.
silkie
Yup, I agree with silkiechick about the twins thing. It is too bad, really! That would be awesome.
My guess is that you only have one or two girls laying right now and the double yolkers might all come from the same gal. I wish one of my girls would do that!
Wow! Now I know how to spell YOLK!
Yes, I think all the doubles are from same lorpe.
Sure would be nice if there was a breed that "specialized" in double yolking....lol. I'm hoping I get a hen that feels like doing me the favor of doubles once in a while.
Julie =0)
That would be cool.
I think the only reason we don't have that is b/c then they couldn't hatch viable eggs, so the only ones that get babies are those who don't lay double yolk eggs, so every time it pops up, it gets genetically pushed out.
Bummer.
that would be awesome.... and delicious!
