Fruits on my Incense!!!

Dover, NJ

I was out checking my Incense vine this morning, and was surprised to find 9 young fruits (all about 1 to 2 weeks old). I've been pollinating almost all of the open flowers, and some buds, with caerulea pollen for the last 2 and a half weeks, so hopefully these are the result. I can't be sure though, because I didn't tag or bag any of the flowers that I pollinated. So, time will tell--hopefully they will not be like the dud fruits I sometimes get on my caerulea vine.

Here's a pic:

I thought Incense was sterile and didn't fruit. I don't know where I heard that but I know i hve never been able to get mine to fruit.

Hi Budgielover,

I believe most, if not all, hybrids are pollen sterile. But they can accept pollen and produce fruit. The odds may be increased by bud pollinating, but I've also heard of people getting fruit without hand pollinating or bud pollinating, even when no other passies in their yard were blooming. Incense has been used in a couple of hybrids that I'm aware of: Indigo Dreams and Blue Eyed Susan. Both of those have pics in the plant files. Indigo Dreams is Incense x caerulea, and Blue Eyed Susan is Incense x edulis. I counted 11 fruit today, and the larger ones do feel heavy.

I wonder if I can cross incense with edulis var flavicarpa. They are the only 2 bloomers I have right now.

do it the other way around to try both ways

I also thought Incense was sterile. Before we knew that DH and I were trying to hand pollinate all the flowers last year...t was my 1st year and I dont have any other passies to try crosses with. I recently got a cutting though, and I know it isn't Incense, but I don't know what it is. My luck it is another sterile hybrid...LOL

From what I have been ready, it is self sterile but apparently can be pollinated with other varieties.

I'm not an expert by any means, but it does not look like 'Incense' to me.

Budgielover,

I can tell you that I went to the Passiflora society meeting this weekend and got 2 huge fruits with seeds. They were Edulis Flavicarpa vr Incense so they definately can be cross bred. And boy do they produce a lot of fruit. About 100+ in each fruit. Here is one of my fruits

MD,
I tried to cross my edulis flavicarpa "alba" with my incense but nothing. Hard to get them to bloom at the same time. I may try to bag up some "alba" pollen to keep on hand.
It's in full bloom again since I cut it back last month.
