shepherdii problem

Medford, NJ

I got some old growth shepherdii cuttings last year in a trade, they rooted quickly but only started putting out new growth this spring. The other day I noticed that some of the leaves at nodes just above soil level were starting to wither at the leaf stem, and that some of the stems in the same areas below the affected leaf nodes are also looking kind of dehydrated, sort of withered as well. The upper parts of the stem and new growth look fine, though if they are losing their base, they won't for long. A few of the cuttings were not affected.

Most of the leaves I took off were older leaves, the ones that originally came with the cuttings, but there were a few new ones as well. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this before I lose the whole plant? I am thinking of repotting, if for no other reason than getting a look at the roots.

I'd look at those roots! You might have to make and root cuttings from the healthy part.

Checking the roots is a really easy solution to wondering what is going on!! Sounds like root or stem rot. Un root it and begin cutting UP the stem until you hit new growth or abit of sap in the stem. Often old wood cuttings will rot as there is so much "old stuff' there...

My 2 cents.

It makes sense that old wood would rot, it probably isn't meant to be under soil level in it's old age. Going to unpot it today and see what's up.. thanks..

One thing I do when I notice an older plant getting really woody at the base is lay one of the vines down in the soil to root...a lazy way to airlayer. Then I know that I will have a good long replacement vine when the time comes....
