Hey all!
Can some one please suggest winter plants/flowers (would LOVE flowers) for my flower bed that will live through the Panhandle winter?
We don't get below very many days, but we get close and stay there at night a lot!
I have been told that Dianthus, Snapdragons, Pansies (of course), and.... well I forgot.
But anyway I was told these things do well.
I was told Mums would die off after the first frost so that is a waste of $8 a pot if I only get to keep them about 1 month! Espacially since I would be several pots, even if I broke them apart!
it will stay warm here until October, or at least it was Oct/Nov before we got our first freezw/snow last year! LOL
Thanks all!
Winter suggestions!
I remember answering a question very similar to your. I just don't remember in which forum, but if you search for my answers, it should pop up.
Txflower welcome to Daves and to Tx gardening. I'm a little warmer than you but pansies bloom and seem to shake of the ice easily. They are quite commonly available and probably overused but like you I like to see a little color in the dreary winter days. Another colorful plant is the ornamental kales which I think are pretty freeze resistant. I'm sure others will join in here before long, probably with some better ideas too! : ) pod
Bettydee ~ I guess I am still new enough here ~ let me ask ~ how does one search DG for your answers please?
Podster you can click on the persons name and then it will give you the chance to click on links they have started or answered. That is how I would do it!
Hope that helps!
Anyway I hope more people add something to this thread! I am looking for things that will do well! I also don't want to have a bed full of all the same thing! LOL I know that is asking for a lot in the TX Panhandle, a winter flower garden that is, but I am asking! LOL
Great thread.
Check out the following

will try to think of some more
Not a flower, but colorful and pretty - the Swiss chard called Bright Lights. Tastes good, too!. Dark green lightly crinkled leaves and stalks in 5 different colors. It's perennial here - I pull it out after three years as the base of the plant starts to become woody. A friend in Pennsylvania grows it through the winters in containers on her deck.
Sorry when I click on Bettydee, it only shows threads she had started. No answers...
I wil look at these plants! I have see pictures of Chard and Rose Kale I think it was called. They are different and have grwoen on me! LOL
I saw a really nice picture of a Crimson Red colored Coleus! But I can't find where I wrote the name down! LOL
Podster I am sorry you are right! I thought by looking at mine it would be the same! Maybe you can run a search for the topic on the site. Sorry don't know what else to say!
I would LOVE any pther ideas for winter plants and flowers! You are right I am excited about this thread! I wish there was a forum or topic that had good detail about this! By regions would be even better! LOL
Texas gardening and climates are so diverse it would be handy for regions. I am far east and find lots of useful info in forums that share similar climates. You may be able to do the same by exploring those to the north or west of your area of Tx.
A magazine I like that seems to have alot of info for all of Texas is Texas Gardener. It does not single out flowers but includes vegies, fruits, shrubs, trees and herbs.
I agree - Texas Gardener magazine isn't limited in scope to one area. Good articles and pictures, too.
HUMM I will have to look for one since I am Planing on going to Barns and Noble anyway!
