Finally, the HVH open house pics

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Hi all :-)

My computer access has been a bit limited over the last several days, so I've been unable to go through and post my open house pics, sorry about that.

First pic is a large row (which extends far to the right as well) of 2-gallon plants for sale. In this size, he mostly had Bon Temps (pictured), High Voltage and Magnifique. Lots and lots of blooming beauties :-)

It's funny, I was probably there about at least a half hour before my mom reminded me, "Karen, aren't you supposed to be taking pictures with that camera hanging on your arm?", lol! I was so involved at looking at the plants, I almost forgot!

This picture is a continuation of the 2-gallon row, but behind the little white fence was a whole lot of 6 and 8" pots with a large variety, including American Legend, Strawberry Fields Forever, Delicious Amour and Soft Spot, among others.

Here's a pic from the outer area of the garden into the garage. This area was filled with 6" of Living Legend, Belle de Jour, Pina Colada, more High Voltage. Mom and I scored the only two Moonstruck 6" plants, so we were pretty excited.

All along the porch rails, they had a lots of blooms from their large variety of cultivars.

Here's hybridizer Charles Black helping a new customer to identify a bloom. He's always super friendly and helpful in answering any hibiscus questions.

I should have mentioned in the last thread, that the porch area is full of 4" pots of all different cultivars. I picked up two 4"-ers. Heavy Metal and Fabulous.

This is a pic of Charles and webmaster and all around helper, Cindy. If you have emailed questions or placed an order, chances are good you have spoken with her - super nice person with a terrific personality.

Also, Cindy also told me that she and Charles are getting married next week in Lake Tahoe. They both seem extremely happy :-) When she told me, my mom nudged me and said "see, I told you that she and Charles had a thing!" - cracked me up, as my mom thinks he is handsome. Please let me be that funny when I get to her age :-)

All in all, had a great day with lots of beauty and laughs :-) I purchased 2 6' and 2 4", so I was a very good girl. Mom, however totally blew out the budget and got a whole van full of plants...

Have a great day!

I'm just like your mom....totally out of my budget! I now have 58 hibs. All bought since April of this year, and mostly from HVH!

However, today I ordered 5 more...from our beloved Robert :)

LOL, Cat - So when I read that you have 58, I went to my database to see how many I have (thinking surely I don't have that many). Well, I've currently got 59 - wow, that sounds like a big number, no WONDER I'm on plant restriction ;-)

I want to order a couple from Robert next week too. Which ones did you get???

Delta Dawn
Envie
Voodoo Queen
Hot Bikini
Blueberry Thrill

I am so excited. Already bought 4 plant stands for my screened patio. 5th one will go on the middle of my outside dining table.
Already have the pots. Waiting and raring to go, er I mean grow, lol.

Oh you guys....I want to order too, but where would I keep them this winter...under my bed? I'm glad you are all able to deal with them through the winter. My 38+ are going to be my entertainment through the cold days from Nov. until March. I have a feeling that the bugs will be my biggest problem. This was my first big year with hibiscus. I had two that I held over from last year.

Brugie, I had so many hibiscus in the house for the winter, DH said there wasn't room for a tree, he'd have to put the lights on my "stupid plants", lol!

We did have a tree, but thank goodness my older daughter went to college so I could stash them all in her room. The going-up-the-stairs (then back down again in spring) part sure sucked though!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Karen, I can't do stairs until I get my knees replaced. I have a plant table under lights in the basement and may have to hire someone to put the hibiscus down there. I can go up and down as long as I am not carrying anything, tho it's slow going. The more I think of it, the more I like the idea of them being downstairs. Thanks.

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

That would be cool to have them in your basement, maybe you would see little bursts of spring when visiting downstairs :-)

Hiring someone would be a good idea, my mom has a lot of problems with her knees and it always worries me with her carrying things up and down the stairs. Her washing machine is downstairs and all the dirty clothes upstairs (of course). I've got her tossing them over the balcony now ;-)

I haven't seen Blueberry Thrill, but Envie is on my list, big time!

Cat, you need to post a pic of your area once it's all planted - I bet it's going to be beautiful!

Yesterday, I transplanted 9 hibs into 20" pots from the ground. Actually really like the pots, lol! Will try to take pics later, if I get the energy to cover myself with mosquito spray!
