You'll notice I'm in the deep south. Down here my portulaca re-seeds itself every year. My question is, -- when grown outside up north, do the seeds survive the winter and re-emerge in the spring, or do you have to replant with new seeds?
I'm not sure of the cultivar I have, but here is a photo.
Question re. portulaca/purslane
Yes they do,too much....Everywhere I look its coming up and I never planted any...they are kinda cute tho...
I am a bit further north, but basically the same zone and every year I buy at least one flat of portaluca(spell?)/ moss roses for the front edge of my annual garden, and so far I haven't had them successfully reseed themselves. Maybe it is because that garden is so out in the open that the wind blows them away before they can find a spot.
Dem and Seren,
Good to hear from both of you. I noticed that both of you are in zone 5a. One says they re-seed, almost like weeds. The other says it doesn't happen.
I'm wondering now if the particular cultivar may be the determining factor. In my garden I have single flower blooms, as the photo shows. But there are many different cultivars out there, hybrids, if you will.
So, for the both of you, do your annual portulacas look similar to mine (photo) or do either of you grow those frilly "rose-like" varieties? Just wondering if a hybrid cultivar might have great flowers, but little over-winter sustainability? Any thoughts?
I live very close to Demstratt, about 20 minutes away. My portulaca come back each year. I can't say like weeds and it takes a while for them to bloom ... I'd say they just started blooming about 2 weeks ago. They are the double variety.
To tell the truth, this year I put preen down very heavily and no portulaca came up in the garden. But last year I had a hanging pot ot them. I ended up not doing anything with the dirt/pot this spring, and now have a very nice container of the portulacas.

well i was just given some of those in a cement urn. i didnt even know that they blossomed ill be waiting for the buds.do they need full sun? mine are in part shade. i hope they do open there very pretty. Ronna
Yes those are the ones I have....Have some of the doubles too, and never planted any of them...they just keep coming back on their own...LOTS!!!
The ones that do not reseed well for me are the more frilly flowered ones, but sometimes in the same season they will speard out kind of weird. like they are coming up from seeds, but those ones never get big enough for flowers before our frost. This year I think the wind coming across my front yard made my iris's and snap dragons grow in "s" shapes, it looked very strange. Anyway between the wind and my deadheading, I get no good returns, maybe they just don't like me:)
