Plant Source?

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Hello out there to all you wonderful tropical gardeners! I have what might be considered by some to be a silly question, but I'm serious. I am trying to get some different plants - things that not everyone on the island has. Some of you may recognize this topic as one I have raised before. I ordered some wonderful items from Logees - who were fantastic to me by the way - but it just takes so long for things to get to me, that mostly they were dried up and dead before I got them. Not Logee's fault AT ALL!! Most of the nurseries in Hawaii are specialized, orchids, Ti, Plumeria and of course - our wonderful Carol's Hoyas. I am looking for other things, and I was wondering if any of you know of a nursery or garden center in either Hawaii or San Francisco (two places that can get things to me quicker than the usual two or more weeks), that carry things like Pachystachus, Clerodendron, Aphelandra, oh heck even marigolds! I'll be watching closely for any responses - and many thanks in advance.

Marigolds!!! LOL!! We have those everywhere right now. I can send you seeds if you want to try those.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Pep - you'd be suprised! Marigolds help keep away a lot of garden pests! And apparently they were once fairly common out here, but I can't find any now. I would LOVE some seeds! I will d-mail you my address. What can I send in return?

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I have no idea what you could send me!! LOL. I have no more room for tropicals so if I got any of those I would have to donate them to work. But I will send you seeds. I have all yellows it seems except for the African marigold which is orange but has no seeds yet. Still blooming away. lol.

How about seeds from a firecracker flower? Got one of those? They stay fairly compact if you plant them in a container. Here's a pic of mine.

Shari...

I know we have talked about this...and I promised the moon!!!!...but sending to an APO scares me. How quick is mail from Hawaii to you via APO?

Carol

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Carol, you dear one! Do not send the moon! It is waaaay too gorgeous right where it is! All APO mail for out here goes through Hickham...so just about everything that I order from HI gets to me very quickly....about a week. Nothing else gets here that fast! So sending to an APO for you shouldn't be a problem, just the customs form, which is no big deal. But you never told me how I could repay you for your kindness! Paypal? A check ? Please let me know.

John, I am growing a Glory Bower...chlero bleeding heart. I haven't found any seeds yet, so I don't know what to tell you. WHAT is that beauty you posted?????

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Wow John!! What a beauty!!!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Johns' is Clero. quadraoculari (spelling)...we call it C. quadrophonic which is easier to remember!!! It blooms here around the new year...VERY invasive...very beautiful!!!

Shari...you may get a surprise one of these days!!!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Oh goodie!!! I wish I could show you all what it looks like at the post office on plane days....everyone standing in line with their package slips waiting to pick them up....squealing in delight, or groaning in pain when they hear something rattle that shouldn't....my DH started the "Somebody loves us" line, and now its "Nobody loves me" or "Ha Ha, I am loved" when we see our friends up at the PO. One day a friend piped off with "Yeah, the credit card companies", in response to "Somebody loves us". Their was about a 10 second pause in sound, and then everyone starting cracking up. Now mind you this was on the outside porch of the post office, 25-30 people milling about smartly....one of those funny memory moments....

Just be prepared for all the questions I will be asking you !

Like the quadraphonic....we do the same, the Hibiscus schizopetalus, we just call the skitz, and our alocacia is the alien....

When the weather cools a little, I'd love to trade you a clerodendrum bungei for a piece of that firecracker flower. Let me know. Thanks, julie

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Froggies - you betcha! Thanks...just let me know when! Woo Hoo!!

Ocean Springs, MS

I'm afraid to dig or plant anything right now. Our temps have been 95+ with the heat index 110+. By the middle or end of September, the weather should cool enough to ship it. Thanks for the great trade and I'll keep in touch. love, julie

Shari, do you mean that even ordinary flower seeds are hard to come by there? Let me know what you would like! Plants are a little more difficult for us to send as we have to go through an inspection station to send out of the islands...
Warmest aloha!

I can't believe how wonderful you all are! I was just looking for a nursery or garden center....and so many of you have volunteered to send me seeds, etc. Thank you so very, very much!

Yep Jenny - every thing I want to plant that isn't already here to get a cutting from, I have to order. Once in a great while our store will get a few plants in for sale, but they don't do real well , out of 13 or 14 that I have purchased only two are still hangin in there. I have no idea where they buy them from.

I didn't think that just regular mail going OUT of Hawaii had to go through the inspections....I knew everything going IN did. Learn something new everyday.

How about blackeye susan, hollyhock, datura, ballon flower, texas star hibiscus, passeflora, two other hibiscus, pink and yellow four o'clock, two kinds of red canna, yellow canna, chinese wisteria, and, and, and........

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

My heavens! you must have a gorgeous garden Christi! I have quite a few Hibs - but always looking for colors other than red. Red is everywhere out here, and my goal is to have flowers that not everyone else has. Never tried the Texas star. I used to have Hollyhocks in Colorado. Loved them, but my they sure can take over a garden bed if you don't keep tight control! Ooooooh - Chinese wisteria.....is that the same as the marvelous wisteria of days gone by? Love it! I am williing to try anything and everything. Some will make it, some won't, but not for lack of trying. Have you guys seen the gorgeous flower displays that Tom-tom posts in the Container Gardening forum? To-Die-For!!!!Would that I had that kind of talent. I am trying two different kinds of containers for just plain flowers - grown from seed, if they work I will post pics, but it doesn't look real promising at the moment. Too much rain I think.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Guess I'm going to have to learn how to post an album......journal or diary maybe?

Anyway, this is just one part of the wisteria....only blooms for about 2-3 weeks mid March-April......the aroma is to die for. This year I have more seed pods than ever before probably because of all the rain. Here I am again watching the cardinal family outside my window. Have a feeder and a bird bath/fountain and the parents are teaching two babies to eat from the feeder and then go to the water......very attentive. DH has the cold that I had last week and we know how DH are when they are sick.....poor baby. So, I spend my Saturday night watching the birds with a little glass of vino. Not too bad.

Trumpet Vine? Many here say it is invasive.....I keep it controlled and if in a pot it probably wouldn't be a problem because it spreads by underground roots.

Ballon plants.....sorry, you know I don't do latin.

Absolutely gorgeous! And is that a bit of Larkspur I see in the corner? The wisteria - fantastic! Enjoy watching the birds, and make soothing noises to the patient...yep, I sure know how they are - good thing THEY don't carry the kids or give birth....we would have died off as a species long ago! Stay cool hon!

I found you! Sending you a dmail. love, julie
