HELP! My Fig is Suffering........Is it too much rain??????

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

I was told you guys might be able to help :o)

My fig looks horrible, it's been raining here in S. TX about 4 or 5 weeks straight. Is it just the rain or should I treat it with something?????????

Wow Ladyborg - mine looks exactly like that. I've been wondering if the rain is the problem as well. I just planted it in the spring and am so sad it's having so much trouble getting established. Maybe someone can help us!

Try Superthrive, hormones and vitamins, can use every week for 6 weeks to inspire root production.

Thanks gardenerme. Will try it!

I think it is the rain. I killed a brown turkey fig (notoriously easy to grow i NC) by piping the drip from my air conditioning to it. When it lost leaves I dug it up and ALL roots were rotted off. I moved the drip pipe to a pussy willow nearby and it loves all the water!

If it was my fig, I would dig the fig up immediately and let it dry in some fairly dry soil for 24 hrs and then lightly water it.

Good advice! I may need to move it.

As long as you have good drainage you should not have a problem with root rot? Figs are heavy drinkers. First I would check the soil PH and if not 5.5 -6.5 I'd add some dolomite lime to sweeten the soil and then a half cup of 10-10-10 fertilizer. I had a similiar problem with my Brown Turkey last year but flyboy gave me the above advice and the durn thing took off like a balloon! I've only had the tree a little more than a year and am eating fruit already. Also have two others one of which is an Italian Honey fig and the other name I forgot.

T-plant - that's a good idea. Mine is a banana fig and the birds got the one fig it produced. I'll get the ph tested. Hoping for next year... Italian Honey fig sounds very unique.

Tplant, I have a question on the lime advice. Are you saying that you want to have fig Phfrom 5.5 to 6.5 and if it is higher than that (I assume your S. FL address has very much limestone) then add more lime to make it even higher?

My soil is a little acid, good for blueberrues, and my 5 var. of figs all like it.

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

No! Just not lower than 5.5 nor higher than 7. In some areas the soil is very sour or acidic and figs like a sweeter soil between 5.5 and 6.5

Thanks, I think I am ok, but I have no idea what Bookiworm28 will find on the soil test- it's a good idea to do a soil test anyhow and I plan to do it as soon as I move into our new house. I am moving into a nicely drained, sandy looking soil so I expect to add organic stuff.

I keep meaning to get my soil tested. This will likely get me going on that. Who does the testing - county extension or?

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

I bought a soil testing meter at Home Depot or Lowes? Can't remember which one but they both have them along with moisture meters. They are inexpensive and are a great asset to gardening.

I did contact the county extension agent and they send a kit. I neglected to ask for the charge for this. I think they test for nutrients as well as pH.
