Indigo Spires Salvia

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Due to all the rain this year, my salvias are too happy. They're over 4 feet tall and getting a bit leggy and droopy. I'm considering cutting them back since they're all trying to fall over anyway. Have any of you cut Indigo Spires back at this time of year without killing them? I whacked on some of the Black and Blue a few weeks ago, and it didn't hurt them at all.

I don't think it would hurt them. The hummers and bees love my salvia so much I always feel guilty about taking away a food source. So I usually cut out half the plant at a time. When the trimmed part blooms, I remove the second half. How far back are you going to cut them?

Most of mine have drowned. I've held on to 4 out of 5 of my second rounders by cutting them back.

As far as I know you can cut them to the ground and they will come back with a vengeance.........prettier than ever

I just noticed this morning my indigo spires leaves have dark purple or blue/black spots and the leaves are curling were they are colored. Of course it's probably too much rain. Anyone seen this before?

I wouldn't worry except to cut them back to the ground.............however, with all this rain, I just sprayed everything I have with both Advanced Bayer and a few days later with Ortho. It seems to have killed whatever pests there were.

Thanks everyone. I'm like coco and hate to cut blooms off, but these things are HUGE. I can't believe how big they've gotten. They still look really good with tons of blooms, but they're starting to fall over some because they're so top heavy. I whacked back some of the Black & Blue because they've covered everything else in that bed. I'm gonna give it a shot on these and see what happens.
