[S]ome of my young corn plants have tiny black spots on the inside of the leaves and down into the stalk area. I can rub them off, but I have no idea as to what they could be.
The spots look like spilled gun powder and are as collective. So far I have not noticed any movement of the spots even when I rub them with my finger.
Can any of you help me with what these spots may be and how to control them IF they need controlled?
Thanks Group!
Black spots on and in my corn. I need help.
Sounds like you might have the early stage of corn smut. If you put corn smut in the search forums box above you will find all kinds of threads about it. It's a fungus so you may need to plant corn in a different part of the garden next year. But check your ears to see if you have gals forming to know for sure if it is. There are pictures on a couple of the theads. Your local extension will have much more information on it. It's been years since I've had it, back when we were farming and it blew in from nearby field corn. There are resistant strains of sweet corn you can plant to help prevent it from ruining your corn. Although in some parts of the world it's considered a gourmet treat! I could never bring myself to try it. Supposed to taste like truffles.
THANKS, JeaneTH, for your input.
Not all of the plants have the "spots". None have produced any ears on the stalks as of yet. I planted on June 1st when the soil temp reached 60+ degrees.
As soon as I send this I am off to the search box.
Thanks again.
PS: I don't think I will find out IF ?they? taste like truffles either. :-)
