'Chicken' of The Corn!

Glenwood, IA

I just thought this was so funny. My one surviving chicken...our hen who crows ;) has been hangin out in this wild patch of corn. I don't know why it was so darn funny...but I laughed for several minutes.

Him and the cat like to 'stalk' each other in there...stalk...oh my. If only everyone could hear how much I am laughing at myself right now!

My kitty Monty isn't allowed to stalk any chickens (he LOVES banties) anymore. I am missing 2 silver sebrights and I have a sinking suspicion that Monty got them. So no more banties out unless they stay inside the pen!! Bad bad kitty, I have to figure out what to do.
Chicken of the corn is funny!!!! Everytime I drive by a cornfield and I drive by a lot! I always think "children of the corn" eeeeekkkkkkk
I am sure you chicken is very happy tonight! Don't let down your guard though. You need some guineas, guard dogs of the poultry world.
After reading your story and others I am putting a baby monitor in the coop. I hope my is secure, why take chances though. I have read on the guez site I go to that a group of them have even made a coyote run off. They do need to come in at night. Hopefully as mine get older (they are only 14 weeks) they will put Monty in his place and protect the others if not, well, I will have to make a decision.
Great job again!! Funny you have a place that the vultures clean up, I had my lame tom die saturday morning/night before and I was worried about burying him and then finding parts of him in my yard later, my neighbor told me about the "raveen" (sp) Its a couple of miles from me off a winding dirt road, you throw you dead down the banking and the vultures etc eat it. I tossed him there, recycling! I guess my neighbor saw a guy tossing a goat there!! Everyone in the neighborhood uses it.

That is very interesting. We have a ravine on our property, but the vultures cant see things in there very well...so we use the front ditch that doesnt have any tree cover. That badger is already gone today. Our cat is affraid of the chickens. She just pretends to stalk them. Seriously...I have witnessed a small mouse walk right across her feet and she was horrified that the thing touched her. She is all talk. But even so...she is only around the chickens when we are home. Otherwise she is inside with our house cat.

We are going to start playing a radio (on news an AM station) to create human voices. People have said that works well to keep things away.

You know what keeps mice away from our chicken coop?

Chickens.

I saw Pandora, my barred rock, eat one in a single gulp.

GULP. I was horrified/amazed.

You should rename your chicken and cat Job and Malachi. Or " She who walks behind the rows". That movie was scary when it came out!

are you getting more chickens? I bet old croweyhen would love to boss some little girls around.

Oh yes. I have new hens coming a week from Thursday. I am very excited. We are getting 3 Rhode Island Reds, 1 red sexlink, and 1 black sex link. I saw some pictures of the Orpington/Rhode Island cross...and they actually do look kinda neat!

I couldnt imagine a chicken easting a mouse! That is just gross! But...I wouldnt not the least bit upset if mine did!

That's awesome. She'll be so happy.

I know, I wasn't upset, just, well, disgusted that my Butterball, my little baby would do that! But, if she is going to keep the mice away, more power to her!

Well...hopefully ours do that some day! We have mice coming out of the wazoo! :)

I've seen mine twice running with a snake, fighting over it. So I can imagine they would have a field day with mice or frogs etc..

It admit it was gross to watch them and I didn't get too close because being phobic I was really worried they would fling it on me...lol.

I read guineas and chickens LOVE mice, snakes and as my Mother says anything that moves and some that don't!! My cats left a small dead vole by the gate my chickens, guineas and turkeys go out to free range by. One maran, Marcy I think, grab it started screaming (you know when they find something really good) and running, of course a lot of the others started running after her and one turkey grabbed it, ran and goobled (LOL) it down. I love having them around, no more kitchen waste, I cleaned green and yellow beans and beets all the waste went right out to them and they loved it. Which brings me to a question which I think I will post....

LOL, I think it's funny when they find something and get all excited and start to run with it. It just draws the flock to them for the "chase" to see who wins the prize !!!

OH yes...since i go fishing every weekend I always save my extra worms to give the chickens. I love watching them take off with them. Its amazing to see how fast they can run!
