Looks a lot like 'Purple King'

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

I have never seen one before. They are gorgeous!!! If you ever want to trade a leaf, I would to have one to try to get a plant from. They are something very special. Lou

Decatur, GA

I'm pretty sure it is 'Purple King'. That variety is really prolific and strong. They produce an amazing amount of rhizomes for trade.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That is the best looking plant..............have to find this seed..............

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

begoniadude, slight possibility that it could be pulcherrima, but more likely Purple King....beautiful and tested hardy to zone 7b by plant delights. lol, if you're ever up for trading....lol ;)

The only one I have blooming is 'Rio Rita', but also have harry williams, blue sparks, pulcherrima, and a mix.

Ooooh, another Gessie plant to try! Very pretty indeed! Are they very difficult to grow? How big do they get?

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

If I'm growing them, they have to be nearly deathproof..lol. They are maybe 6 inches high, and spreading. I was surprised when one broke off and I kind of stuck it in the ground..it rooted. :)

Thanks Tropicana! I've gotta go Google this plant .... one I must try!

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

I say Achimenes Purple King as well!

Very pretty flower!

Irving, TX

I got mine from E-bay. There were about 8 rhizomes that looked kind of like pine cones.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Remember girls, i can't shop on ebay...............i have a -2 rating (LOL)................I may eventually learn how to get another account................

I don't have any Achimenes, and I'm jealous of all these gorgeous blooms! :oP LOL Y'all know I'm kidding about being jealous, but they are lovely. :o)

Irving, TX

OK. I took a cutting this morning and am trying to root it in water. I also took a couple of leaves and tucked them into potting soil and then enclosed the bot in a ziplock bag. We will just see if it works. Wish me luck.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Good luck.............I always put cuttings of gesneriads in a mix of soil-less, perlite and some vermiculite and then cover until they are out of shock............

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

My pulcherrima bloomed!.....lol...bad picture but cool flower. I was surprised with the cuttings, they basically rooted themselves as I have no skills whatsoever ;)

that is so pretty, Tropicanna................going to google it and see what she is...............

How long will the plants keep growing. Do they die back naturally in the Winter or do I just stop watering them like with tuberous begonias?

(Zone 1)

Here's some info I found on culture for the Achimenes. Says for storage to leave rhizomes in the container and let the soil dry out:

Tropicana: Where did you find that plant? I have done a google search for "Pulcherrima" and do not find one that looks like yours! It is sooo pretty and I love that foliage too! Would sure love to know the exact ID of your plant. When I typed in the word pulcherrima I get the Pride of Barbados which is also an Gorgeous plant and a Euphorbia pulcherrima .... and some turtle that has the name pulcherrima!

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Lin, Type in achimenes pulcherrima and you'll get different results, here's a liink from Brent and Becky's with a pic : http://www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/summer/productview/index.php?sku=50-07

I ordered some from them and some from Bulbmeister. All the achimenes I got from bulbmeister are doing great, and all the ones I got from B& B didn't do anything (not throwing off on B &B, I stand by their stuff, I must have started them wrong).

Begoniadude, I'm not sure what zone you're in, here there are only 2 types that are hardy if left in the ground, Harry Williams and Purple King (cough..which I am seeking...lol). But if you are in 8 or higher, your possibilities are better. I feel safe to assume Purple King is hardy for you. This is my 1st year growing them (so excited!) but I seem to recall that they will bloom until frost.
