I just love my floating gator / his eyes even glow. have not lost a single fish this year.
floating gator seems to keep birds/critters away
Hi Paulabyers,
I just saw your post!! I found a large gator head made out of plastic I think it was $75.00, then lost the link! I then went to the dollar store and bought several green blow up gators, I have one in the pond I think I saw the resident muskrat sneer as it swam by it, LOL Where oh where did you purchase your gator and how much was it?? I have had so many darn blue and the white herons at my pond :( And the darn cormorants have visited it too!! I was out at the pond the other day, re-potting some of the pondlilies, I turned around and there was a blue heron, just walking in the shallow part of the pond!! I turned around and yelled and threw the shoval at it, FINALLY IT FLEW AWAY!! My pond is a big one, with a clay bottom, deepest is 12 ft. Water has receded now somewhat, and the dock fell over :( Any information about buying those gators would really be appreciated :)
Thank You,
tootsie
By the way, very nice pond :) Here is a pic of my pond w/ gator
We bought our gator on ebay, really cheap and makes people jump, it's so realistic! It's just the head, but I'm thinking I want the jointed full body one...
Brenda
Hi Brenda,
I will take a look on e-bay, THANK YOU for the info :)
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, THANK YOU, Moretz :)
Thanks, I've got my first heron problem. It picked the small goldfish pond in the front yard and flew right over the big koi pond in the back yard!? I lost a Bristol shubunkin I'd had for 6 years and a nice comet. Today I'm netting the small pond but looking for an easier alternative to the 20x30 koi pond. Ain't nature great?
AWWWWWWWW, Snapple, so sorry to hear of your loss :( The darn things just keep on swooping over to our ponds and having LUNCH ON US! I ran all the way down to the pond yesterday just banging the tin pie pans!! I got almost to the edge of the pond before the darn bird FINALLY flew off, but he only flew as far as to one of the huge trees just in back of the pond! I waited and waited for the thing to come back! I gave up and went into the house, about 1/2 hr. later I glanced out the sliding doors and yep, sure enough, there was that rotten thing again, just sitting there so comfy at the waters edge! GOT THE PANS OUT AGAIN AND RAN LIKE NUTS , THIS TIME TO GET HIM!!
Sounds like a good submission to America's Funniest Home Videos! Did you ever ask yourself why we do this to ourselves? This is NOT a relaxing hobby! I'm thinkng of getting a super soaker squirt gun - ones of those that can shoot about 50ft.
Interesting, I wonder if a fake gator would work in an area where there are not naturally gators. Would the birds have the same instinct. Does their migration pattern take them to areas that would have gators, there for would they act in the same manor????
I'm gonna find out HollyAnnS - gators are definitely not native here, although we do come across an occaisional "it got too big to keep in the bath tub anymore" gator that some idiot dumps into the local river.
Yes, we had one of those gators a year or two ago. Someone put it in a Harrisburg City lake. It took quite awhile to catch and was a great source of interest. I'll be watching this thread to see how you do. We didn't get started on the big water garden as planned this year and my little water feature isn't in much danger. But I'm interested in seeing how you do.
I NEVER thought my 400 gal 2 ft water feature with 6 fish would be a target either. Today I have 4 fish. I'll post my outcomes.
I had a "visitor" who helped himself to my smaller koi, At the Dollar Tree they had a bright colored snake that swelled up when you put it in the water,(2 feet ,grew to 4 feet) really works, Mr heron doesn't stop any more. I just tied fish line around the middle and a small rock on the other end of the line and put it in pond. Waterfall, caused it to move.
