I like the old standby, wood shavings you get in big cubes at the feed store!

I've been using pine shavings and will probably supplement with some straw in the winter.

i always use pine shaveings the cheapest for amount is at tracter supply ya get twice as much as the biggest cubes at walmart (and our nearest feed store) for i think it is like 50 cents less. i'm alergic to hay so that's why i use it most of the year plus i need it for the bunnies anyway. in winter i do use hay as it holds the heat in to keep them warmer. just for that season dh get's the job of changeing coops and hutches, lol.

I use mostly Straw and when wood pellets go on sale I use them. Easy to clean up and chickens love to scratch in it to get the bugs.
