Looking good Big_Red!

My Cantaloupes have been very good this year but the watermelons have been very slow to develop in the drought. Most people in this area have been harvesting theirs for a few weeks but mine are just now developing. I have a dozen or so on the vines from softball to basketball size.

Question for you. I thought most of mine were Sugar Baby. I planted several types and lost track because the ink from my markers wore off... Mine are all variegated with light green/dark-green stripes. Does Sugar Baby start that way and then darken like the one you have pictured above? Or do I have something else? They're all very round like a Sugar baby would be...

TIA,

Jeff

looking very yummy!! cant wait til mine ripens in about three more weeks

Jeff, They start with light green/dark green stripes but turn to dark green. Here's a picture of a non-ripe melon taken on June 30th.

Here's a couple more I picked today. This makes a total of 7 melons off 6 plants with many more to come.

Eating the first cantaloupe of the year today. Many more to come.

And I was clumsy while feeding the melons, tripped over a vine and broke off one of my only two ripening watermelons, a New Queen. It wasn't fully ripe, but it was ripe enough to enjoy, while regretting how much better it would have been in a week. Sigh.

There's one bush Sugar Baby out there setting fruit in an encouraging way, but that's all there'll be for the season. Sigh.
