Can you ID this Hibiscus from its buds?

Oceanside, CA(Zone 10b)

Our Hibiscus has been blooming for a while now and I've been keeping track of the buds with lots of pictures. These pics were taken July 21. Do you know or can you guess what kind it is?

I would not know the name but I am going to take a shot and atleast say it is a yellow or white. I lean more to yellow. This I am saying because of the shape of the leaf. But I will admit I may not be seeing the full leaf.

But sticking with it being a yellow.

well you're right about one thing, I will say it is either white or yellow...
What else can you tell about it? It has an interesting characteristic other than it's bloom color...

earlier in the year, in spring it had some aphids on it so we had to dust it.
Here are some traces of the dust. Does the leaf shape help to ID it?

well I see we've had 24 views so far and only one ID.
I thought there would have been more attempts, but maybe this harder than I thought.
I love how the buds have these little "spider legs" that wrap around them when they first form. Almost as if to provide a little protection from predators.

Mother Nature is quite the designer isn't she?

Is it a hardy hibiscus? The leaves in the third picture look like leaves from a hardy variety. I'm not good at this, but had to throw my guess in.

You are right Brugie, it is a hardy variety... but the blooms are white with a rose tint to them.

I believe it to be this one:
Family: Malvaceae (mal-VAY-see-ay)
Genus: Hibiscus (hi-BIS-kus)
Species: moscheutos (mos-KEW-tos)
Cultivar: Luna Blush

the blooms are gi-normous. We love this hibiscus, we call it the Great White Hibiscus around our place. The flowers can get up to 10" in diameter a little later this summer, as they did last year (we hope!).

They almost look like a flower a clown would wear in the circus.
But these don't squirt water in your face when you approach and that's a good thing.

The first ones to bloom are the smallest.
They'll get even bigger in a couple of weeks.
Then, by September or so, they're done for the year. =-(
This one dies off every fall, only to come back with a vengeance next spring.

I like that little red eye. Nice pictures.

The first thing I looked up was mallow. I went all over the web. The buds looked the same but the leaf I could not tell. Yellow and white in the hibiscus world are something I am always drooling over.

I got a seedling of this one (I thought) right beside the older plant. Leaves looked identical.
I brought it home, planted it and in a year it was 10 foot tall and growing. No blooms. I had not been back to where I got it and I really felt something was off. Well by the 3 year...last year still growing taller it finally did something. Leaves dark green looking like in hibiscus family, I even posted then on DG to see if anyone knew. Nope.

I cut it down last year and haven't managed to kill it yet. It was or still is a white mulberry tree. I can't seem to kill it. But I will eventually.

I wanted this mallow hibiscus :O( and a stupid mulberry seedling right smack against the mallow making you believe a seed sprouted came home with me. YUCK!!!! I didn't even know they grew in Texas. Now I am stuck trying to rid myself of it without much luck. That will teach me not to bring home strange plants not given to me by a dger or bought at a nursery. LOL

These are wonderful flowers. When they wilt and die, they look like lacy french cuffs from those old movies.

Fronds, your blooms are very pretty, but I REALLY like the pic of the "spiderly legged bud" - that is just a super cool pic, and for some reason, kind of ominously reminds me of the little Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors ;-)

ohhh yeah, scary. I remember the scene from Alien when that thing that jumped out at John Hurt and enveloped his head. Kinda looked that too!

Here's a pic from today of the lacy cuff look.
All we need now is a sword fight.

Before they wilt they still look beautiful but in a tired sort of way.

Sometimes this plant looks great, other times we have to get rid of the old flowers to make room for the new.

Speaking of the new, this variety does churn out the buds.

Oops. Guess I mis-ID'd this one. Not the Luna Blush variety but grandiflorus sounds about right...
It really looks like:
Family: Malvaceae (mal-VAY-see-ay)
Genus: Hibiscus (hi-BIS-kus)
Species: lasiocarpus (las-ee-oh-KAR-pus)
Synonym:Hibiscus californicus
Synonym:Hibiscus grandiflorus
Synonym:Hibiscus lasiocarpos
Synonym:Hibiscus moscheutos subsp. lasiocarpos
