This was grown from seed received from a DGer in the spring of 2006. It didn't bloom last year but has half a dozen or more blooms now and many more forming. It is very pretty but not shaped like any that I've seen on the hibiscus forum.
Please help me identify it,
Louise
Help ID this hibiscus
It looks like Texas Star to me, but you should wait for someone who is sure, to ID it for you. I'm not the best at identifications. LOL!
I agree, that's what it looks like to me too. Hibiscus coccineus, aka Texas star.

Brugie has it right. It is a Red Texas Star Hibiscus. : )
Thanks so very much to all of you. It's nice to know what it is. There are lots of large seed pods developing. Do they burst open and scatter? If so, how mature do they have to be to be viable? The pods have turned from green to light yellow and are already very bumpy looking. Can I gather them before they break open?
Louise
I have never let mine go to seed. I pick the pods to keep them blooming. These will multiply by roots or cuttings so I've not worried about the seed. Aren't they pretty!
Texas Lou.. Wait until they turn brown. The light yellow wil turn to a sickly sort of brown looking color and then a regular brown. When brown all the way around and ya se e the stem turnign brown too then they ready.
Yes, they wil burst open and scatter if ya dont pick them right before they do, or put a pice of nylon stockign ove r them to catch them if ya gonan be away. Cuz onc e they get the icky half brown half yellow look it usually only take s a day or two for them to finish ripening up and start opening .
Thanks to both of you for the advice on the seeds. And, also, I didn't know they could be propagated by just the root pieces.
Louise
Did you get it from me?
Let the seed pods form and turn brown then pick them off before they scatter.
Yelp Texas Star.

LaviniaMae,
I had sooooo many trades last year that I really can't remember who sent them. I'm thankful for all the new DG friends I have. They were most generous with the seeds. I shared them with both my daughters and still have some that are not in the ground yet. I hope they will still be viable when I make room somewhere for more beds.
I'm in the process of building a bed on the edges of a dry creek beside my home. I have been given elephant ears, canna, holly fern and iris from my trades. I worked too much today and now have a serious back ache and I even wore a back brace today. I'm hiring most of the digging work.
I found the most exquisite little flower today on what looked like a grass plant. It was about two inches across, had two sets of three petals - one on top of the other, was a beautuful shade of dark purple with a detailed center part. I plan to dig them up and move them to a bed. There are three plants.

Louise I hope its and Ice plant I love those.

Malestrom,
Until the help from this thread, I had many reservations about whatever plant I had. I had never seen marajuana (sp?) before, but suspected that it looked just like the plant I had. Needless to say, it is in the backyard - behind a tree, no less !!!
I now rest easy, since my mind has been informed.
LOL

I have some more seedlings that are supposed to be 'Texas Star Hibiscus' from another DGer and the foilage doesn't look like the one with the blooms. By the way, I harvested my first seed pod from this plant and it produced many, many seeds. What shall I do with that many seeds?????
Use the seeds for gofts and trades.
Or sprinkle them in a smal area to make a lil forest of them.
There is a report of someone getting arrested for suspected marijuana while growing Texas star Hibis.
They look similar but Marijuana is different enough to tell the difference.
As with any plant look alike there are tell tale differences.
I think the Texas Star is gorgeous in foliage and flower.
Congrats!!
