My First Pond is now so overgrown and chock full of plants, I need to make a second pond.
My DS wants it up through his trellis tunnel into his enchanted gardens and I think that's a great idea. I have a 2 piece very large dragon that would go very nicely in that theme area.
Anyway, he wants to see pictures. He won't let me start digging until he sees pictures.
Does any one have a website that would show a variety of forms of ponds that we can get some ideas from? This will be a stillwater pond with water lilies, anachris, hornwort, papyrus, canna lilies, callas, swamp hibiscus and whatever else I need to thin out.
This is the now over stuffed existing pond.
I need to make a 2nd Pond
I love the dragon! Were you wanting to use a rigid liner or rubber liner material? I think you will have more creative freedom if you dig a pond and use the flexible liner. There are a lot of threads here on the water garden forum that show various pics of ponds. There was one not too long ago that was specifically for pond pics but I am not sure which forum it was on. I have two small ponds connected by a stream. Started out with a hole for a shrub that just kind of "grew" into a pond that is roughly round and about 6 feet by 6 feet. The next year I found an 8 foot round cattle pool at an auction and had that sunk into the ground for another pond. The next year I decided I would like a stream, so I dug a trench that was about 1 foot deep and about 20 feet long that gives the allusion of the two being connected. It has three small waterfalls and acts as a biological filter for the bottom pool. Have not added anything to it yet this year but the summer is not over........ LOL Whatever you choose to do I am sure it will turn out beautifully for you.
I almost lost this thread and came looking for it today. We finally made a decision on where the new pond will be........in the front gardens near the patio/orchidhouse/greenhouse. This way it is close and visible so we can enjoy it more. This is for the lazy guys that do not do garden walks every day.
3 weeks ago we started digging. Got it less than half done and work required us both to do double shifts for 2 solid weeks. Anyway, this is the start of the dig with plans to put in a liner.
Today my bf and I got back to working on it. There are 3 shelves formed in the underlaying sand, on opposing ends. 2 for potted water plants and one for the triple dolphin fountain statue. Not sure yet if I will bring the dragon over. I do know I have a small wishing well that needs a home.
The large area in the middle is about 32 inches or more deep and will provide space for 2 of the water lilies I pulled out of the smaller pond. We used less than the recommended mil plastic so we double lined it after putting in underlayers of thick moving blankets to protect against punctures. Luckily we have a sand based ground and any of the roots previously here have long since been eradicated.
We built a sand berm around all the edges the low side berm being taller to try to level out the water surface area. This ground is on a bit of incline/slant. The plastic will wrap up over the berm with more sand packed around the back side. Then we'll use lime rock, which is readily available on my work sites, to build up to camouflage the plastic edges and to form a pathway to the pond for gazing.
I have already filled the pond and transferred some of the plants over before it got dark. I'll take more photos after work tomorrow when we fine tune things some more.
BTW, it seems we got back to this just in time. The 2 clumps of fakahatchee grass on each side of the first pond have grown to 3 clumps and are over hanging the pond edges so heavily I have to push them aside to get to the pond edge. Additionally, the lilies and vines in the pond were really getting thick. It most definately was time to get moving on the bigger pond.
Sorry, too early yet to get another photo.
It's hot out, the gnats are nuts and I come home from work and stay in the a/c for a while.
We did move some more plants from the smaller pond today. I didn't realize how choked it was until I find how many I keep pulling out of there.
I pulled the large and the dwarf papyrus, lots of anachris and hornwort. Many hyacinth, a couple blooming sensitive vines, LA Iris, 2 water lily plants and some water celery. I figured I better get some plants in there before the algae hits, and it WILL hit.
The water is warm now so tomorrow on the way home I will stop for some feeder gold fish to stock it with for the mosquito larvae. Need to keep that population down.
On the weekend we'll get the dolphin fountain set up and the berm buried in. We'll make a trip to one of the job sites and gather lime rock to edge the pond and the pathway with.
Having company from one of our S. Florida gardeners tomorrow after work. Looking forward to his visit.

:^)))
We picked up some lime rock from one of our construction sites and brought it home. Unfortunately, this is not enough to do the job, but is quite heavy and cumbersome.
We'll be setting some today and during the week, we'll collect some more.
Billy suggests we take a sledge hammer next time to reduce the sizes of some to make them more manageable.
I'll be moving one of the larger fakahatchee grasses from next to the smaller pond area. We need some light in there so the solar pump will work.
