When do you know it's time to harvest it?
Thanks

Lemongrass
BB ~ lemon grass is best used fresh. Harvest the tender young shoots.
I believe using this is like chives, when you take some, the plant regenerates far more than you cut.
I keep mine in a pot and will provide winter protection. Last winter I lost a big pot of it by leaving it out.
Thanks.
Mine is still very thin and nowhere near the size the sell in thr grocery store.

The one I started from seed this year is pretty thin and weak looking too. I intend to provide winter protection this year.
How did you get your start? I heard some on DG were doing starts from the grocery store lemon grass.
There are 2 species of "lemon grass," which might explain the small stalks you're seeing... Here's something I posted on another thread, http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3390150
Ahhh...That explains it.
I am definitely growing the East Indian variety. Thanks Critter. I wonder if I can still use for seasonings.
Podster.
I started mine from seed and then repotted the clumps
Both varieties are used in cooking.
I love you, critter. You're so smart.
Credit goes to Tom DeBaggio -- again! -- for that information. Nearly everything I know about herbs I've learned from him!
Has he written any books?
I'm looking for some just read you can make a pesto and tea from it.
I couldn't find any in our nurserys in the area called everywhere.
Its the Herb of the year and Mother Earth News has a great article on it this month.
Lavina
I brought my seed from Johnnys

Oh. I was on another thread and here is all the lemongrass info! I grew mine in a pot for a couple of years. I got the plant at a local nursery but I didn't notice it being for sale this year. Probably best to get it from seed anyway. I think mine got left out and froze up pretty quick.
