It's only a babe, maybe 4 years old. All the leaves are dropping! Too much rain?
What's Wrong with my Magnolia Tree
Wow, that looks serious, it could be too much water, but I don't know for sure.
I hope it recovers.
Josephine.
Me too. I'm devastated. It was a prized gift from someone I love very much. The leaves started dropping about 2 weeks ago and the entire tree is almost defoliated. The leaves started turning brown. I don't see any insects and I don't see and sign of fungal disease. I'm thinking it's sick internally. The spot it is in doesn't have the best drainage. In fact, that part of the lawn turned to mush when we were picking figs. Root rot? It will be impossible to save. Poor Margaret (her name).
You never know, I would give it some time and see what happens, in the meantime, don't give it water if you water your lawn.
knolan, I have not fully researched this but please check into the hydrogen peroxide thing. I lost a datura last year due to too much water in a location I picked for it and I couldn't move it. I had to watch it die. Then I read here about the addition of hydrogen peroxide in that situation. I filed that away in my brain in case that ever happened again. Might be worth looking at.
With all the rain we've had, everyone's first assumption would logically be overwatering. I grew up in east Texas where there are a lot of magnolias. I've seen some in semi boggy conditions that didn't have a problem. I did have something similar to this with one in my yard here in town though and it was a fungal problem. With all the rain, fungal problems are common, so rule that out before assuming overwater. Did the leaves have brown spots on them before they turned colors completely and then drop? Mine did that and I lost almost all the leaves before I cleared it up with an application of Funginex. I hope it's not root rot and that "Margaret" survives.
Crow
Kristi, I just got my mower back today after a month, not that I could hardly mow til now anyway!!!
But I noticed one of my banana magnolias is dropping it's leaves! The other one is on the other side of the yard & looks fine. I didn't think this one was in too much water but it has been so wet, who can tell?
Where can we find the thread about the HP, anyone know?
Kristi, I found this thread. Scroll down to 8-7-05 by Dittik.

When I mowed today, I noticed some of the places that have been standing in water, were actually black & I'm talking about what had been St Augustine lawn b4.
I think I will try this for my banana mag & see if it helps. It has been in the ground for over a yr & was doing fine til now. It is a good 6' tall.
Here's where I read about it, Smockette. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/467990/
which took me to this link.

Knolan spray that tree with some Messenger. All the old leaves will drop off and new ones will take its place. I did this on a dying Poplar and it came back.
Thanks for all the info. guys! I've been out of town....sorry haven't responded. The poor thing looks DEAD. I';ll do my best to revive it. Haven't got a chance to go to those links. I'll catch up. In the meantime, thank ya'll.
